Flash lights to get others to move over?

Might be showing my age here but when I was much much younger I distinctly remember that in the old days when on the motorways or dual carriageways people, my old man included, used to flash their headlights at the car in front and lo-and-behold the car in front would move over.

These days I've hardly seen this and on the 1 occasion I remember the 2 cars involved ended up road raging each other for some dry exhaust pipe antics for miles on end.

Apart from reflecting on sentiment and the good old days I was wondering how people here would react if there was a gap to their left and the car behind came along and flashed them? The obvious answer is that if there was a gap you'd have pulled into it ages ago but humour me :)

Simple solution would be porper driving education so that the plebs don't sit in the outside lane for the hell of it.

most people who do it are ********. Passing 2 lorrys at 80ish when some **** comes up at a ton then flashes.

As far as I was aware you aren't allowed to flash people to get them to move out the way, it's seen as aggressive.

I seem to remember one of those police programs that follow the traffic cops on the motorway pulling someone over and giving him a ticking off for doing such a thing.

I maybe wrong though.

I've only every flashed someone once to get out of the way.

It was at some doddery old fool in a Metro sat at 45mph in lane 2 of a totally deserted dual carriageway. (NSL limit)

Some guy in an M3 who was ahead of me tried it first but the old guy didn't budge, he then went onto undertake him. I then had a go but he still wouldn't budge so I had to undertake him aswell :(

I was on the M1 on Friday last week and we had just cleared some congestion, I was overtaking in the outside lane when a Passatt Estate came storming up from behind doing around a ton constantly flashing his lights. I whipped out of the way as soon as I could, and he continued to do it to the cars in the outside lane, including large amounts of tailgating, until he was out of sight.

My first thought was that it was some kind of unmarked emergency services vehicle since I would hope no-one actually drove like that, but this thread has made me re-think that and maybe he was just being an idiot.

I just indicate right, and make sure I'm as far over to the right as possible.

If that doesn't work, I'll just undertake.

Really ***** me off when cars (esp on duals) hog the outside lane going no faster than the inside....personally I would'nt move over because I wouldn't be hogging the outside lane anyway....also if I'm overtaking with someone behind me I'll pull in & out between overtakes to let any car wanting to go faster past.

& this is the problem.....you catch up to a car hoping it will move over..it doesn't, you give a short freindly flash, it does'nt, you then end up doing just that..being & feeling agressive giving longer & longer flashes.

If I'm doing = or more than the speed limit in these cases I'll press on the brakes. Never happy when some *** is right up my backside when I've got my kids in the car.

It is people that you that causes half the issues.

So what if you're doing the speedlimit, this doesn't give you the right to prevent the driver behind you for doing more.

It doesn't matter if you're doing 60 or 120, if someone is behind you - move over, simples.

Tailgaters and flashers get the lift off treatment until they are foaming at the mouth

In your case sir, I would enagage you in full on warfare, I keep a wireless keyboard in my boot for just such an eventuality. its a logitech jobbie so I already have the AIDS and VIRGINS programmed into the macro keys.

in the words of robot unicorn attack

you will fail

If I get flashed (not that I am likely to see it with the crap rear visibility of the Octavia) then I make sure to pull over as soon as possible... followed by dropping two gears and nailing it as soon as Mr 2.0 TDi pulls along side.

Immature? yes, but it makes me smile :o

Only if it safe to do so, on the M25 it seems people think a cars gap is enough space to move over

If I'm travelling steadily overtaking other cars and a flasher comes up behind, where moving over would put myself and the car behind in the lower lane me and also in front in the lower lane in more danger then I'll just sit at a comfortable speed until I think it's safe to move over.

It's the idiots that expect you to move over just because they are travelling faster yet your still overtaking and expecting you to adjust speed and change lanes. And I'm not talking 60/70 I'm talking mway 70 - 78 mph when someone clearly doing 90+

You're totally wrong & obviously havn't read all my posts above....if I'm approaching a slower vehicle I'll mover over to overtake if safe to do so & move back....I then don't expect I should have to suddenly take offf & break the speed limit to let some ***** in a beemer whos just caught up to me & up my backside past...they can wait till i've overtaken & moved back in. I like to go faster than I should but If I'm gonna break the speed limit I'll do it when I want to .

Also as stated earlier above....I also hate lane hoggers!
