Hi, i've installed Lubuntu 11.04 on a 11 year old laptop. Runs great but flash isnt working.

Now Adobe web site suggests its disabled in Chrome & asks you to type Blank : plugins into the address bar. It lists all the addins/pluggins but non list the Abobe flash or something similar.

Any suggesting on other browsers with working flash?

try

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin -y

or

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer -y

the first one should work fine for both Chromium and FF though.

Thanks, the second command worked fine. But now the performance if youtube is bad. Would say its 1 frame per second, even after letting a video fully buffer. Same with firefox but i presume its using the same plugin.

Ever seen this before?

11 year old laptop? Sorry that's not going to run Flash very well at all. Why bother installing an OS on something that's gonna run it so badly...if you're gonna run Ubuntu on hardware that old, you need to go back a fair few years to get decent performance!

As already said.. your machine will make a fantastic little browsing\email system AS LONG AS you can live without flash as it will run like a dog.

Whats your laptop spec Ali195...

the latest adobe flash player needs a minimum of 64Mb Video Mem and 128mb Ram and atleast a 2.4 P4 CPU just to run smooth on SD around 480p

10GB HDD
Total Memory 256MB
Video Memory 8MB
Intel Celeron 600Mhz
Came with WinME

PC WorldBench 2000 score of 107, Celeron-600 CPU, 128MB L2 cache, Windows Millennium Edition, 10.4-inch active-matrix screen, S3 Savage/IX8 graphics chip with 8MB of SGRAM, 10GB hard drive, built-in V.90 modem, touchpad and Jog Dial pointing devices, 4.7 pounds (including AC adapter, phone cord and external CD-ROM drive); Sony MovieShaker, PictureGear, Microsoft Word 2002, Quicken 2001. $1099 back in the day. its nothing like todays notebooks... yeah your never gona get flash media running even close to half decent on that, sorry mate. time for an upgrade if you can

Interesting, it says i'm not part of the trial. How does it work after you join? Do you have the be signed in or something?
I think it uses cookies and you do indeed need to be signed in.

I find HTML5 videos tend to use less CPU, but a Celery 600 is going to struggle even to play back a DVD so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

You can see if it's using HTML5 by right clicking on the vid once it's playing.

I'l give it a try but it's not mine anyway. Some sales person at work asked to have look at it. Her child is using it but gave it back to me when flash wouldnt work.

It's looks & feels just like todays notebooks but the hardware is obviously rubbish (and the build quality is abit poo after 11 years of abuse). Thanks for the advise folks.

yeah, sorry but the facts are that the child would also want to go on rubbish flash games, and they would suck as well. My advice to the salesperson is to get a newer 2nd or 3rd hand laptop with a 1gz cpu and a graphics setup with at least 32mb shared or even better 64mb and 1 gig main ram. I have an old lappy that has a Via gfx chipset, and it plays flash fine as long as shared memory is set to 32 meg.
