Flash older BIOS version on ASUS Z170-E

So...

I've got the 8-pack i5 6400/Z170-E bundle (had it about a year) and it's been working great at 4.4 GHz.

I switched to a new case/SSD and GPU today and ran into problems upon turning the system back on.

I tried updating the BIOS to the current latest version but that didn't help.

I eventually sorted it and am back up and running now. The problem is, I thought I would be able to flash back to BIOS version 0050 and overclock as I did before but it seems that flashing back to older BIOS versions is no longer possible with the newer BIOS versions. So, basically, my system has reverted to the stock 2.7 GHz and I can't find a way to get it back to its previous speedy best.

I've tried flashing via USB in BIOS (this is not a proper BIOS file) and also tried via the command prompt in windows using a flash utility and the relevan .rom file (error 368- access denied or something).

Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't think I can get a chip that is significantly faster on this mobo (skylake) than the overclocked 6400 @ 4.4 GHz...

thanks

I'm surprised. Flashing the BIOS via USB is the safest, most recommended method. Did you format the USB stick as FAT32? Usually, you have to extract the BIOS from the ZIP file so it'sd just the BIOS file on it's own on the USB stick.

The other issue may be that now you're on the latest BIOS, you can't flash an older BIOS. If I update the BIOS on my X99 board beyond a certain version for example, the BIOS release notes specifically say that flashing to an older version isn't possible.

Unless you put in one of the Skylake/Kabylake K-series chips overclocking usually isn't possible. When Z170 came out, overclocking of non-K chips like the i5 6400 was possible. Intel wasn't very happy about this so they had the board manufacturers release a BIOS update to close the loophole. This is why the bundle instructions say you need to run the older BIOS.
