Flashable and quiet hd6950?

You can flash any 6950 even if it has no bios switch, but you wouldn't have the safety of the backup bios if things were to go wrong. I don't have a clue whether they unlock or not though.
There is a possibility they might not unlock at all.

If it's low noise your after with the 6950,I can recommend the AC Xtreme 5870 with a couple of extra heatsinks. You won't hear it over your case fans if you leave the fan on automatic with CCC even when playing games. Xfire can be done if your mb has the space between pci-e slots as the card goes from 2 slots to 3.

Cards with none stock coolers may not be reference cards and may not be flashable.

If you look at the cards on OCUK some say they're "Revision 1 flashable to 6970".

But this one, with a fancy cooler, doesn't say that:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-113-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

I would say that if you want a card which can be flashed to a 6970 you need a Revision 1 reference design card so none of them will be quieter than any other.

If the GPU has software disabled clusters it can be unlocked.

If the GPU has software disabled clusters it can be unlocked.

And if they're disabled in hardware they can't.

What's your point?

The reference cards are stated to be unlockable and the none reference cards aren't.

If you're buying a card to unlock then buy one which states it will unlock, not one which doesn't state that and hope for the best.

Get the powercolour one. The retauler that sells you the card MUST deal with the warranty and MUST provide a replacement within a REASONABLE amount of time. It's the law. Thus sgoukdnt take longer than 28days

Tell that to Powercolor Ocuk tested and sent my Eyefinity5870 2gb back to Powercolor on Feb 2nd, It's now the 7th of March and I still havent recievd a replacment card yet.

I cant fualt Overclockers they tested my card and sent it off right away, but the more I read up on Powercolor and there warranty support the less I like them :(

Well I would ring OcUK up, 28 days is what is deemed as sufficient time for an RMA, either get your money back or a different card as replacement.

Im not going to take the risk with a card with no bios switch. I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a reference 1 card with a quieter fan. I could get an aftermarket cooler, but as I am going to be running them in SLI I would have to buy two, in which case I might as well buy a 570 twin frozr. It looks like i am just going to have to decide whether I can put up with the noise in return for the money id be saving. Hard decision considering I've already bought all the other components, largely based on how quiet they are.

If there was a quiet 6970 I wouldn't mind buying it, but I dont think there is one with a twin frozr cooler, and the asus directCU is too big to put in SLI on my motherboard. Maybe I should stop being fussy, but I don't want to buy an expensive card and regret it. Thanks for everyones input.

PowerColor Radeon HD 6950 PCS++ Graphics , twin fan custom cooler with shaders unlocked.
Hardware Heaven gives it 10 out of 10.

Im using AB for profiling the 6950 ive got
Ive set the fans to only really go above 30% speeds if the card starts to get above 60 degrees.
I barely ever hear it above my antec case.
Agreed after market cooler would be a nice to have but in now way a nessesity

why is it the only decent one has crap RMA! :(

I know, very annoying. Although I suppose they can afford to make it slightly better due to the better profit they will be making by failing on RMAs.

Blackhorse, is your case loud? To be honest, I think I could get sound to acceptable levels by creating fan profiles. Although when I crossfire, I imagine that 25% fans on idle might not be the best idea.

Its the antec 1200, so 6 fans running before i even start with 2 extra on the CPU. (i7 processor heavilly clocked at 4ghz)
Its upgraded the fans to be quieter and running as softly as possible but there soft hum which ive grown used to, if im gaming i cant hear them (without headphones)
But ive set the profile low, the fans dont go above 17% on the GPU whilst general browsing , in games it generally gets to around 30% max as the GPU reaches 60 degrees.

Next build is most certainly going to be a water build, ive ive grown a love for heavilly clocking things and unfortunatly on air that comes at a price for a heavily vented case!

The HIS referance cooler ones are pretty quiet, and i have both of mine flashed to a 6970... and overclockers handle HIS warranty. (thats why i went with HIS anyway)

Your contract is with OcUK. Though it really is not their fault, they have to do something (like a different brand 5870) NOW.
