I got flashed by a speed camera doing 30mph indicated on the Speedo. The limit changes from a 30 zone to a 40. The camera is set further up the road in the 40. The road is clearly signed 40mph where the camera is.

I found it strange it flashed, so I span around I went back through it just under 30 and no flash? Could it have just been a defect with the camera? Is there a likelihood of a fine? If I get a letter how do I go about proving I was under the limit if it says I was doing more?

There were no other cars on the road at the time. It’s my usual commute to work on that road and it’s the first time that it’s ever occurred.

It’s one of the newer style front facing cameras.

Pretty sure front facing cameras don't produce a visible flash as it would dazzle drivers. They use non visible infrared flashes.

Are you sure you got flashed?

Edit: it appears they do flash behind a magenta filter that is visible to the naked eye.

Do what the poster above said. Do you have a dash cam or any sort or GPS logging that proves your speed last night.

What car is it?

For a start, go and take some photos/video of the camera and the road signage showing the 40 limit.

i took some of the signage before the camera but not the camera itself. I will do that later today.

The car is a Lexus CT200h hybrid. I have no gps/logging device. My worry is it will be difficult to prove my speed in case they say I was doing more than what my speedo showed. The camera flashed as I approached the three white lines.

I heard sometimes cameras 'calibrate' and flash a car to do so. However this may be a load of tosh

If that is truly the case, then every other car before you would have also been flashed. They'd have to get someone to check the calibration of the camera to make sure it is reading correctly.

Surely the three white lines are there for this reason. I always thought the camera takes two photos a set time apart to provide evidence based on the distance moved in relation to the lines on the road that you were actually speeding?

That’s what the lines are for, they are the ‘proof’. E.g. you have to have passed them quickly enough to get a fine. If you didn’t then no fine. The camera activation is almost irrelevant on its own. The whole point of the lines is to prove that beyond doubt.

Speed cameras activate all the time, that doesn’t mean they are constantly handing out fines for no reason. They even activate when there is no car there. They are digital now so it’s not like someone has to come and change the film anymore.

If it is a front facing Gatso on the other side of the road you’ve nothing to worry about. I know many Gatso cameras around me have no film in them, being used in rotation once in a blue moon. But Gatso cameras are not licensed to convict from in front.

Not the case for all other types however so you have to wait an see. I thought I got done a few weeks back on the A50 for over 80 but turns out I was closer to 70 than I thought or lucky as I heard nothing.

I think this is the Truvelo D-Cam type of camera.
It will illicit a course if you’ve not done one in last 3 years for a similar offence. I did one a couple of weeks back virtually. Was not too bad with decent uncondecending host.

They have to be re-calibrated every so often otherwise they drift out I think. If it's one of the old type it might not have been done for years.

Also if it's in a rural area most of them seem to get the lenses painted over lol
