You'll be fine as Gatso's in the UK aren't type approved for oncoming traffic.
And I've been flashed by a Gatso on the opposite side, around 3 months ago, so it's all good and you can put this one to bed, so to speak.

If your close enough to the lines / over them going the other way it will trigger the camera but you can't be done as stated
They go off if you're going towards them at high speed. They can't be used against you though. Dread to think how many shots there are of me on the A68

Possibly because the strobe has been charged too long and it needed to discharge.
They have to have the strobe charged ready to do the good old double flash in an instant it detects a speeding car. No point in detecting a car then waiting for the strobe to charge up like on your little digicam. Car is long gone.
Just a coincidence that you were in that place at that time, unless there is a cunning plan to discharge when something passes in either lane - just to induce paranoia
