Flashed by speed camera

I too have been ticketed for 34 in a 30, Humberside Police late last year. First time in over 20 years driving, considering I have owned performance cars for many years I consider myself fortunate.
I have a real issue with the Cameras near me, they usually park on a bend where a 40 zone changes into a 30 on a fairly rural road that isn't particularly hazardous, this screams of money making and does nothing to stop accidents. Why dont they set themselves up near Schools etc where speeding can have serious consequences?

I believe most 30mph cameras are triggered at 34 or over. If it was facing towards you it should not flash!

you sure it wasn't a driver who was going the other way that got flashed? maybe even malfunctioning camera, I've seen a few zapping everything that moved past them.

If it flashed it you are you sure it wasn't for the other side of the road as they don't flash you from front facing or you would be dazzled

Gatso's will flash for both directions, in some countries they can be used for both sides of the road, but not in the UK due to the way the law works. (i.e a secondary measure required when flashed with a gatso - the lines on the road)

There is a way to adjust the speed threshold which will activate the camera for both directions independently, usually the one for facing traffic will be set quite high so that it is not triggered by cars going the other way, but if you go fast enough you can still make them flash.

Some have the threshold a bit low so its possible to make them flash when going the 'wrong way' without doing silly speeds, but it can't be used as evidence of speeding.

There was a speed camera i used to deliberately speed up to as it was on the other side of the road facing me just to make it flash! Many times! Not talking of excessive speed, just 35 was enough for it to flash.

I know that at the start of 2015, this would have been against Humberside policy and if you had spoken with the Central Ticket Office it would have likely been canceled. I know that's not helpful to you now, but I did a load of research into individual force policies on this.

Nice to know for the future :) I hate these things with a passion, criminal in a lot of cases.

All the speed cameras around my way seem to be disappearing :)

Only to be replaced by Average Speed Cameras instead :(

Same around me. Loads have appeared in the rural areas :/

Up until they did, we used to see traffic cops every so often. Now we see none and they just rely on the automated systems. But people have clocked on to it so they simply remove their plates and go as fast as they like knowing they won't get caught (bikers especially). You can hear them hooning it around late at night. They spend millions on these cameras, but they are effectively useless.

All of this would be easily solved by posting a Google Streetview Link of the camera itself.

ACPO Guidelines is charge at 10%+2 meaning 35mph in a 30. I'd be amazed if anyone got charged at 32 outside of Scotland, hell there was a bet going on PH for many a moon with £100 reward for someone able to provide proof if they were charged below the guidelines..

It definitely flashed from front facing and dont think there were white lines on the road, cant quite remember if there was a car on the other side as i had just finished work on a night shift, thanks for the advice though guys!

Edit - if anyone wants the road name, it was along the a146 in norwich on barrett road

It does happen, albeit very rarely and usually only by being pulled over by officers. Some forces will not bounce summons from traffic officers that are below the threshold on the basis of officer discretion, others will, usually when it's reviewed by a central ticketing office within a constabulary. Cameras, static or mobile, don't normally allow for this discretion in force policies which is why you don't see it, but again, from my FOI requests, the data does show this does occasionally happen. Some forces admitted that these occasions, usually below 20 in any given year, are due to error in procedure.

I'm usually pretty sceptical though, because more people say they've been caught a couple of miles over the limit than the data suggests.
