Flashing cursor on Win7 install

I do not know what is going on here!

The machine is a Dell M1530 laptop.

I have tried installing from DVD and USB memory stick but every time the 'Press any key to boot from DVD/CD' appears I press any key and I get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner, no further progress afterwards.

Any ideas what is causing this? The DVD works fine in other machines and the installation starts with no problem. But my laptop refuses to go beyond this flashing cursor.. any ideas?

Hey robin, I haven't yet. I may do that next.

After 30 or so continuous tries I was surprised to see it get to the next step. But then was greeted by a hardware error message from the Win7 installation (Before even getting to the copying files to disk stage).

I had a suspicion that there might be a hardware fault as I have never seen this kind of behaviour before.

Tomorrow I will take out each of the RAM modules to see if there is a RAM fault, seems like the only thing I can do.
