Ive gotta flash my current motherboard to support my e8400 sat here now preparing it, any one got any nice little guides or tips?

I'm going to be using a USB pen.

Just make sure you reset your bios to fail safe defaults before flashing, thats a recommended precaution to take I think :).

What brand is your board?

If its ASUS I'll be able to help you out no problem as its a fairly simple process, especially as it's off a USB pen

My mobo is Gigabyte, when I updated the bios I think I placed the required files onto a CD and then used a built in flashing utility, cant remember the name of it.

Just do it in windows using the Gigabyte gui.
They have either true Dual BIOS or Virtual Dual BIOS's on gigabyte mobos so the risk of it going **** up are very minimal.

I have blown BIOS's in windows on dozens of computers without any problems, gone are the days of needing too do it in DOS.
(Obviously you should never attempt a BIOS flash if your rig is not 100% stable)

Does the download not have a .bio file or batch file or anything?

At work we just boot off a usb pen then run the required batchfile...then it's done.

Or sometimes you'll have to load up a program within dos then flash the new bios on. Which is just as easy.

Wheres the download link? Can have a quick look if you want...?

if you use Gigabyte like mine which I used the GA-M59SLI-S5 and using @BIOS which is Windows BIOS that make you so easy - you need go to GBT website and download new BIOS version and then run or open then save into new folder then open @BIOS then flash it new version in few seconds then reboot that you get new one -- last time I used BIOS F7 and already flashed to new F8 last night in 15 seconds - very easy. I saved into 2nd hard drive and then load up into @BIOS to flash it plus BIOS write protection after you flash it to aviod the BIOS mess up.

The beta bios, comes with 3 files 1 is a batch yes.

This is my first time attempting anything like this so please provide as much detail as possible!

*Bare in mind no windows is yet on the computer so using a program like @BIOS isn't an option atm unless i install windows*

Well going by the fact it has a batch file you should be able to just boot off the pen, then change to the directory of the batch file, then run the batch file :)

I'm downloading the bios now anyway...So I'll have a quick look.

Rite, as long as your USB pen is bootable...ie when you turn the system on with the USB pen attached, it goes to an A: prompt or similar, just goto the directory where the bios you downloaded is. Then run the batch file by typing autoexec then hit enter, then it will either go off and do it's own thing, or ask you to select the bios file in a seperate program....but looking at the batch file it should just start flashing the bios on.

Hope this helps :)

**Edit** As Braveheart says, it IS a beta bios, so use it at your own risk obviously as it may still have issues...who knows. So it's upto you whether you want to try it or not.

I've attempted to update the bios and i'm not back to square one with one difference, now neither cpu will work just got the fans spinning.

You tried a CMOS clear at all? Might help...Try removing the motherboard battery and the power from the psu for a few minutes, then re-install the battery.

If this don't work, you may have to try a bios recovery.

Do you have msn at all? would be nice to get some step by step advice.

Sadly I'm not at home at the moment :)

I'll have a quick gander through the manual, see if there is a bios recovery you can try or something.

But for now try removing the battery, see if that helps.

the 3 files are used with a DOS format on a disk to automatically do it on boot to the disk with autoexec.bat. i didnt want to format my usb pen and they didnt fit on a floppy, AND it wouldnt let me load it off the USB pen so i had to put the bios file only on a floppy and flash it using the utility in the BIOS.

making a DOS-bootable CD or USB pen and then putting the 3 files on should be fine, although i advise against copying the autoexec.bat, and to type the command inside it manually to be safe.

If you read the autoexec, then compare that to the files, it's no different than if you were to type the file names :) But I do see your point.
