Flat Screen Advice for Gaming - Please

Once again Baddass for the info.
I had a read on TN screen used by VX922 and in the article there is mention that the TN's suffered from dead pixels & that TN's have a problem with displaying blacks.
Plus the contrast ratio is 1:650, is this going to show black colours as real black ! ? :(

I am not to worried about the viewing angle be restrictive to 140 degrees. that is minor to the potential problem of the above.

There seems an element off gambling in choosing the right TFT monitor. And it is a lot of money to choose the wrong one.

What would your choice be if money was not an issue, and which one you choose for the best value for money.

Many thanks

What CRT is that? :) I had a Mitsu Diamondtron 19" CRT before and I thought it was an excellent monitor. Superb colours.

All TFT's can have issues with dead pixels, it's not necesssarily just TN Film panels. Black depth has improved on TN Film recently in the last year or so, but that quoted contrast ratio is still only a dynamic contrast ratio thanks to extra electronic features. You will probably find it fine, most people do really on modern screens. TN Film still offers some of the best choices for a gamer :)

Baddass.
I asked you this a year back or so but times have changed.
'If' I was to take the leap and go Flat, which would you recommend for me?

I play Quake2 and 3, HL2 and generally fast FPS titles. I also do a lot of 2d work in Photoshop and video editing.

Something that matches the CRT Diamondtrons in picture quality and crispness.
19" atleast.

I think somewhere you will have to sacrifice slightly in one of those areas. The best photo/colour work screens are generally very slow and designed for graphics professionals. On the flip side, the fastest panels for gamers are perhaps more aimed at people who want bright and vibrant colours. That's not to say that colours aren't accurate, but just something to bare in mind. I guess the photo work is not at a massively professional level is it?

Anyway, if you want an excellent gaming screen then you can't go wrong with the Viewsonic VX922 in the 19" market. It is still fundamentally a bit weak in some areas due to the use of TN Film panel technology, but for a gamer, it is very responsive. If you wanted something bigger, and more of a premium product, the NEC LCD20WGX2 is arguably the fastest model in the 20" market and also offers some more rounded performance thanks to its AS-IPS panel technology. This will offer better colour depth (8 bit instead of 6 bit+FRC), better black depth (helped largely by LG.Philips DRF technology) and much wider viewing angles than the VX922 could. These two are the cream of the crop really for gaming on TFT's right now, but don't offer the pure colour accuracy that a pro graphics TFT or CRT could

NEC LCD20WGX2

Hi Baddass,

I read your reply to Killajaz about TFT screen for gaming

I have read the spec on that NEC LCD20WGX2 and it truely does come across as impressive.
I take it that it is a lot better than the Viewsonic VX220 ?
