Another one of those "what would you do" threads :p

At work we have a flexitime setup where by you need to work 37.5 hours a week and each day we have certain core hours to work i.e. we have to be in for at least 10am and the earliest we can leave is 3pm.

so you can say come in at 7am and leave at 3pm etc

Now during the week I time my flexi so on Friday I can leave at 3pm and try and beat the traffic (everyone else in the city centre seems to have the same idea). At around 2:50, 10mins before i'm about to leave i get a message about a problem that someones having testing and if i'd have a look. based on the info its not easily fixable defiantly not in the time left.

Do you tell them your off at 3pm and you'll take a better look on Monday or do you stop behind the fix it knowing its probably going to take the best part of 30mins + ?

Baring in mind that said person raising the issue has chosen to structure their flexi so they come in at 10am and leave at 6pm.

Depends how frequent it is - I usually end up working an extra 30minutes to an hour atleast once every 10 days or so (on top of any other overtime) due to either people running late or last minute problems. Depending on the problem and how much I need my weekend though I might tell them I can't address the problem properly until Monday.

I'm in the fortunate position at the moment where I can pull my Friday work day all the way forward to a 6am start and do compressed hours and/or use some hours on other days and so be out the building by 10am to mid-day and basically get a 3 day weekend so it does really suck if something comes up last minute.

Where i work the core hours are 9-5 but flexi states you can work from 7am till 7pm

We have to provide support between 8-6 so it is not as simple as coming in for 7 and leaving at 3 if no one is there to cover until 6

Answer depends on overtime rate after your contracted hours for the week finish at 1500.

It depends if I had anything on that night. If I had planned to meet someone at e.g. Costa or Nero at 16:00, then I would made my excuses as 14:50 / 15:00 would be fairly short notice to cancel the other(s) going to Nero. If I had nothing on, then I would stop over and accrue flexi / time in lieu.

If it was me I'd fix the issue and then stay late to beat the traffic, then use the time gained towards a flex day some point in the future.

Depends on the attitude your company has to TOIL/OT payments and whether you could get your time back or paid out for without catching a load of crap for it.

This:

Unless this:

Bit more info.

We don't get paid any overtime we do.
Flexi is on a weekly basis so we can't carry over the time, that's why my case was specifically Friday :)

If it was another day of the week I wouldn't mind as I would have built up time and come in later one of the previous day's :)

I'd say "thanks for the email, I'll take a look when I next have an available time slot, hopefully next Monday am."

Thanks, feel a little less guilty now. Just know on Monday I'm going to get a load of crap of them :)

it would depend on how flexible your employer is to your needs outside of work, ie if you needed to come in past your normal start time due to an appointment would they expect that time back or let it slide.
Its a two way street imo :)

If you have genuine flexitime then just sort out the problem (I wish I had problems that took the 'best part of 30mins' to sort out!), sounds as though you don't though. I'd probably do it anyway but that's just the culture of where I work.
