Flickering display

A mate has a Sony VGC LV1S, one of those all in one type PC's and he's got intermittent flickering of the display. He knows sod all about PC's so as someone who knows a little I'm trying to help.

My first thought is GPU - a GeForce 9300M GS. I've done a bit of googling and couldn't find any well known faults but it's still the first candidate that sprang to mind. That may be biased though - when I had a similar problem it was my 8600GTS that had overheated.

I'm going to pop round and have a look at some point and was going to try updating the drivers as a starting point. With such scant information is it possible to give me some pointers as to what to look for or ways to test it? I don't have any netbook GPU's that I can swap it with unfortunately.

If it is the GPU I'd expect the problem to get worse when it is stressed. I'd suggest you also check the LCD inverter board.

I take it you cant connect an external display to it? I would try that first before you start ripping out internals. Then you'll know if it is indeed a fault with the GPU or the display itself.
