Hey :)

I've used flickr for a short while now, and I quite like it not only for the community aspect, but also for inspiration. But I find it's hard to find other images that aren't already popular, and popularity seems to come from circle-jerk groups with comment-swapping and whatnot. It's all a little shallow really.

I recently signed up to 500px, and the visibility of your images is phenomenal compared to flickr. I quite like the layout, and the comments/likes system all seems a bit more honest. But I'm missing the groups aspect of flickr, the ability to view photos by people with the same camera, and the ability to view images by a map search. Maybe it's there but I haven't found it yet?

The other thing I've found is that 500px is rather NSFW. If I want to peruse images on my lunch, it has to be flickr. Half the adult content on 500px isn't marked as such, and there seems to be a lot of it!

What's your preference?

Flickr is what you make of it.
I avoid any groups with those annoying stickers it's just spam. Smaller active groups tend to have a better community. I made all these mistakes early on and felt quite disconnected from the whole thing.

Tbh I regularly delete any non active people I follow. I only follow those who I develop some sort of rapport. Someone who has a similar niche either same skill level as me or higher so I can learn.

Personally I avoid anyone who follows more than 200 people unless there are some truly remarkable pictures.

I've not tried 500px

I find more awe inspiring work posted on Instagram than on Flickr. Ever since Yahoo took over, I've noticed Flickr has more and more snapshop uploads where people are clearly using it as an image host these days.

There are still great groups within it, which I browse and contribute to, but I like the function of 500px more. As it stands, I upload the same images to both platforms. Instagram is more of a mash of everything for me. I use that for everyday things, as well as sharing my favourite works.

I've had Flickr since the very early days and have seen it grow considerably in that time. I like the platform as it stands at the moment, just wish it was as fast growing as 500px is!

I'm very surprised just by how much more exposure is available with 500px. Yesterday I signed up just to see what the upload interface is like, I uploaded a simple HDR shot from my drone, nothing special. Surprised to see it has 100 views and 30 likes, and this is without being a part of any groups or having any friend connections. On Flickr, things go unnoticed on the whole unless you drum up friends or group posts.

I won't be ditching Flickr anytime soon though, I have a grandfathered Pro account from 2012, which gives me unlimited storage. I find it to be the very best way to privately share albums to friends and family via a guest link. They get to have access to various sizes including the original high res upload in a nice clean interface. Works very well.
