A friend of mine wants help building a PC specifically for Flight Sim X. The use case of this PC will be exclusively light work (Email, Excel) and Flight Sim X - no other games, video editing etc.

He has already bought a Samsung G9, which is an ultrawide curved 5120 x 1440 monitor specifically for this, so the PC needs to be able to drive that. Budget is £2000 for just the machine - no peripherals or audio required.

I'm not sure what GPU to recommend. My instinct says bigger resolution = bigger GPU, however from what I can find out about FSX, it barely hits 60fps if you plug it into a nuclear reactor, so perhaps sticking with a regular 3080 would be fine over a 3080TI?

I've done a rough spec but I'm sure this could be optimised. It comes under budget, so could go up to the 3080TI if everything else checks out.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,870.50 (includes delivery: £14.70)

Are you really, really, really sure your friend wants to go down the FSX route? I've used it for years before migrating to XP11.

It's a lost battle. You spend more time tinkering than flying with snake-oil frame rate fixers and fingers crossed the Sim doesn't crash after a four hour flight.

Please wait for XP12 or use the latest MS Flight Simulator.

It's Microsoft Flight Sim he wants to play. I know so little about these games I just assumed it was the same thing.

I'm sure other people can now comment on your spec.

From my experience of FSX, nothing was ever enough.

A flight in a Cessna over the Cotswold countryside got you oodles of Framerates. Over NYC in a PMDG 777 and you were down to low FPS.

I've no idea on Flight Simulator.

Well, the 12gb 3080 is closer to a 3080ti in performance than the 3080 10gb version so out of the 2, it's the one I'd go for(I have the 10gb version)

another alternative is the AMD 6950XT..this is amd's own card(much like nvidia FE cards) and so is significantly cheaper than aib cards. It also trades blows with a 3090ti in a lot of games, but is cheaper than the 3080 card you have.

Can you friend not wait for the new gpu's to come out. That ultrawide is 7,372,800 pixels, wich isn't that far off 4k's 8,294,400 pixels.
