hey folks

I have a nephew who really enjoys the original game, and is interested in buying the steam version, is their any way to bring over his paid addons to this version or would the need to be purchased again (I've never played the game, so have very little knowledge on it)

any ideas or advice?.

TIA

They should install in exactly the same way. The only way the Steam version differs is in the installation location of the game directory, and a few updates that Dovetails have added themselves. It's basically the same game.

If an installer of a paid addon cannot find the directory of the Steam version he can install to the normal directory and then copy the addons files across.

However, is there a specific reason for him to buy the Steam version? It's the same game... The only reason I bought it is because I lost the discs.

I think that he's been having technical issues, and figures that as this version is still being updated that this may resolve some of them. So, just to confirm, their would be no need to re-buy his addons?

If you don't have FSX installed then FSX:SE installs to the original FSX paths thus making it easier to install any add-ons.

yeah, it doesn't seem to play nice with 8.1, which is why he's looking at this version as another company has updated it making it now compatible.

Personally I didn't have any problem with the boxed version on Windows 8 or 8.1. The main thing most people run into is letting it install into the Program Files (x86) directory and then not having rights to access it when installing addons but that's been a problem since Vista and FS2004. Easiest solution is to install it to it's own folder in the root of the drive instead if that's the issue he's having. I can't think of any other problems that could be caused inherently by 8.1.

It doesn't. It installs under the Steam Library like any other Steam game.
I wasn't being very specific I was referring to all the files stored outside of the actual program folder (program data and user folders). The game's installation folder installers find out from a registry entry, the data folders can not and these are the ones that cause the problems.
