Flight Simulator X

Yes, i've a similarly specced machine and i agree with your rating completely, i'm rather depressed at having spent 50 quid on it.

I've just read a review in pc pro that raves about it and gives it 5/5, come on, i dont think they can have even played it.

Apart from the lousy fps and river thames bugs, i get light brown grass in the uk in autumn, it looks more like southern spain in the summer!!

Also, thry keep going on about the dx10 patch but either they've deliberately made it rubbish so that vista and dx10 looks good (i doubt they are capable of this) or the dx10 patch will do nothing.

I am waiting for a miracle with this one and not expecting it.

Seeing as this is so bad what commercial flight sim do you reccomend? (i.e. I enjoy flying 747's etc. across europe.)

The demo ran like a dog on my PC and had BSOD as soon as anything happened out of the ordinary like putting the gear down happened.

In X-Plane 747's feel like fighter jets so I don't think that is right.

This is a very tricky question fs2004 is pretty good but the stock planes and scenery are not that brilliant. Lots of free addons at avsim though.

If you can get fs2004 cheaply (less than 20 quid) then go for that and see what happens with fsx.

Or just get fsx and expect it to be rubbish (50 quid on rubbish though)

Meh, I hope MS can get there act together and get a decent patch out to sort some of the 2D corruption issues, the dire performance on top end machines and some form of improvement to ATC

Hmm, I purchased the deluxe version today and installed it on my XP Pro partition. It installed and activated fine but I'm also getting very poor performance.

Out of interest I wanted to know if it ran any better on Vista (I've got a dual boot system running XP and Vista RC2 Build 5744). Anyway, I can't activate it on Vista :( because it's already been activated and I need to ring MS or so it says.

This is very poor, not only does it seem that the performance is very poor for very little gain, but It looks like they've built in a really poor activation system.

I don't even use FSX anymore so I shouldn't have bought it now I think of it.

Normal games require 40/50/60 FPS to run smooth whereas I find FSX needs a measly 20FPS to be smooth.
The main problem here is that it still has to have a fair few detail settings turned down to get those FPS and it looks crap at the same time too. .......Pathetic

This game was released for DX9 and should be a lot better than this, so they (Microsoft) have no excuses there.

I don't really mind that it takes around 15GB of HDD space or it takes a while to load up and start as you are able to fly around a massive area the size of the Earth.

For me, the only thing FSX has going for it is the better texture and mesh terrain possibilites. I have nearly always exclusively flown FS9 with VFR Photoscenery for England & Wales and a new one is coming out soon with amazing detail. 1.2m tex, 9.6m mesh etc.....this also has the added bonus of giving great framerates as there is no rubbish bloated autogen etc sending your fps down the toilet bowl.

Of course it aint cheap if that's all it's good for but for me it'll justify the cost.

As for a more general appraisal of FSX I think newcomers to flight sims, and even veterans of the series should avoid it like the plague for now....go buy FS9 cheap if you must get your feet wet, and wait to see what happens with FSX.

MS didn't have the guts to totally rewrite the engine, even tho some of the Aces dev team admitted it might be a good idea to do so.
They played it safe with keeping a lot of legacy code in for backwards compatibility, which compromises performance. Funny thing is tho, the backwards compatibility is awful anyway. Many planes will not work properly, airport sceneries are screwed in many cases, etc....not to mention the terrible landclass/texture set which leaves most temperate zones of the world looking like a desert!

Yeah, way to go MS!... :D

I was going to post about how the retail version isn't as bad as I'd expected after my experience with the demo and a lot of online reviews.

Infact I was quite enjoying FSX (for a while) and could see perhaps that there is room for optimism once the 3rd party stuff starts coming through and the possibility that Vista/DX10 will raise the graphical quality.

BUT... After running this for a while it's decided to no longer work at all. Basically it now stops at the "100% loading complete" message but doesn't move on. I can hear the engine sounds in the background and it responds to my input but no graphics - stuck on the loading screen.

I've searched on Google without success for a solution.

What is annoying is that I just activated it after checking that all is well. Can I reinstall it and reactivate without having to answer to MS ?

Bit annoyed at the moment.

gamespot gave the it bad reviews, specifically because of the frame rates.

Trouble is, I sold my copy of FS2004. Now im stuck. Do these tweaks I hear about work? And where can I find them. I know the tweaks for Fifa07 worked fine.
