A Canadian Friend has been travelling around Europe recently and is visiting London soon. Then they are flying home to HK via boston, but haven't booked the London - Boston flight, only the Boston to HK flight.

I looked on skyscanner and a one way ticket is about 600 quid in February, whereas a return ticket is about £300. Is there any catch to buying a return ticket and not using the return part?

Wouldn't have thought so, the can't force you onto the return leg or charge you more for non travel

as long as he is using just the outbound then he should be ok, if you fail to use the outbound some airlines have been known to cancel the return leg

This can be the case, especially on long haul flights.
The best is to shop around really, or try and get an open jaw ticket.

As for throwing away the return leg, there's no problem with that.
