Flights to Australia

Netflights.com had the best deals when I booked. Ended up paying £560 with Malaysia Airlines from Heathrow to Melbourne.

Then after I'd booked Singapore Airlines started offering £399 returns :(

But Netflight should pick them all up.

I am flying wednesday to Sydney, got a flight with Qantas via dialaflight for £629 return which i thought was good, Asiana was £459 but never heard of them. give them a call!

Fox did you fly alone? really not looking forward to 25 hours by myself!

You've missed out there - Asiana are not a common airline but are an exceptional airline. They are one of only 5 '5 Star' airlines in the world for service quality.

Qantas, by contrast, are only 3 star.

Yes I did. The way back was even worse as I had a 3 hour internal flight from Cairns as well!

Thanks guys. Really useful. Will check those out.

£399 return is insanely good.

Are there 'best' days to leave during the week to get a better price. It can be pretty flexible.

Loads of people say go during the week but frankly I didn't find it made any difference.

After doing exhuastive reserch my opinion is that Singapore Airlines is your first choice for airline followed by Malaysia Airlines. Malaysia has the most legroom you'll find in economy - 34" - and Singapore Airlines has the best inflight entertainment with power sockets and ipod video docks at every seat.

I'd pay £50-£100 more over any other carrier to fly with one of those. By all accounts, Qantas/BA (The route is a codeshare) appears to be dire.

Emirates are cheap but you get really annoying stopover times in Dubai which make it a 30+ hour trip. Singapore and Malaysia flights are generally about 22-23 hours with a 2-3 hour stopover at Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

Take into account the prices tend to go up and down on a daily basis, and it can get rather frustrating.

I'm planning to fly over next summer, most likely with Virgin. We have a family holiday to USA using Virgin this christmas though, so should be able to pick up some flying club points and hopefully get a sub £500 return flight to Sydney next year!

Just keep watching the prices, and when it gets low enough for you to consider 'reasonable', book. Sure, it could continue to get cheaper, but it could also go up :/

I'm sure my brother (lives near Melbourne) was talking about Air Aisa offering really cheap returns at some point, may be worth looking into.

This is Air AsiaX - the idea was to undercut the main carriers and offer no frills service on longhaul. Trouble is the main carriers are now offering such great deals there is no point bothering.

Not as great as I'd hoped. Is that because of it being in/around December?

Probably, yes. Our flights last year (early November) were the same. It's Summer and everyone wants to go there for Christmas/New Year for some reason.

I don't really have anything to add other than I will be flying to Oz and Nz next month:D The company has booked and sorted everything out for me, all I know is i'm flying with Qantas:/

Qantas fail but I guess its the most Australian way to do it :D

How long are you going for?

It's not amazingly long at all but hey, it's all paid for and I only have to work a max of 4 days for the whole trip:D Fly out on the 6th to Sydney, leave for Auckland on the 17th and then back home on the 22nd.

Not very long at all but for free who can complain :D

Make sure you rent a car from Sydney and go and explore. You've enough time to do that for sure :)

regretting Qantas now :( Asiana sound better, nevermind i didnt pay for it either am going on business for 6 months.

oh well just bought quiet comfort 2's and a ipod should serve me well if the in flight entertainment is poor.

The visa to OZ, is electronic, just make sure it is booked.
Should be done by the airline at the same time as the tickets are purchased.
Doesn't cost when booked with flights, but you must have one before you board.
Unlike USA the Australians are not tarded and don't take 3 days to stamp the visa form, they can process it in seconds.
