Flirting with the idea of a new phone... but too expensive?!

I've been flirting with upgrading from my iphone 4 but the price of new top handsets / contracts is mental!!! £600 for a phone upfront or ~£60 a month are you freaking kidding me?!

Obviously there are diminishing returns with buying the most up to date tech, but are there phones (HTC M8 included) really worth this extra mega-dosh for the average bro or are they only for 1) legitimate gadget enthusiasts and 2) complete and utter chumps?

Struggling to find a reason to upgrade from my £12 a month SIM tbh.

Sell it to me!

As far as I can tell, the biggest pro over the new phones is actually 4G capabilities. Unless you commute on a train or regularly as a passenger in a car and you are the world's most antisocial person, is there really much benefit in this? I gather that a lot of the speed increase actually comes from modern phones' abilities to load data faster onto the screen of the device rather than the download speed itself.
