floating point

many moons ago the fpu was an addon chip

but now it's all in there

in fact AMDs are stronger on the fpu side than Intel because there is an extra fpu core (3 vs 2).

Intel 80486 was the first Intel processor to include a built in 'Coprocessor' (FPU), and it was released in 1989, so still another 3 years before 2 decades is up.

Even then it was a another year or so before all Intel X86's included the coprocessor. The 80486SX (Guess intel would call it a Celeron now) didnt include the FPU.

The Pentium was the first Intel chip where there was no 'option' for a cut down version without the FPU. Of course the first 60/66mhz Pentium's had a fault in the FPU. Intel actually did a recall, I remember shipping my Pentium down to Intel in Swindon, for a free replacement.
