Hi,

I've recently upgraded my ageing AMD 64 3500+ to an Opteron 170 which I intend to overclock. Only problem being that my temps are high (50' idle) even when using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64, and yes, it's running at full pelt then too. The ambient temp in the room is pretty high (27'), but I'm suspecting the airflow in the Coolermaster case isn't too great.

Would upgrading the 80mm fans (to YS-Tech, Delta or other fans with good CFM) make much difference or would I be better purchasing a case with 120mm fan mounts? It would be a pity to get rid of the Coolermaster as it looks great.

Cheers

Paul

Try re-applying the thermal paste and reseating the cooler, those seem excessively high temps for that cooler. It looks like the cooler isn't making proper contact with the chip.

It might be to do with the case, but do what the person above suggested. I remember moving my AMD setup (with stock cooler) into an antec p180 from a different case. For some reason my stock cooler didn't like the case and my temperatures shot up to 50c idle.

Hi,

I've reseated the cooler several times and seem to be hitting the same temps everytime. Even the stock cooler is having the same effect. Maybe I'm unlucky and have an Opteron with a badly fitting IHS?

I'm not too sure what the spec of the standard fans are and therefore whether getting new fans would make much difference?

Hi,

I'll check the temps of the other components and case tonight but I've ordered some YS-Tech silent 80mm fans, and they should arrive today. They seemed the best compromise of performance and noise.

I've also ordered some Arctic Compound M1 so will reseat the CPU again.

Many thanks for the replies.

Sorry for the delay getting back with some more info, but here goes:

I've now rehoused the motherboard, etc in a new Antec 182 case and routed all cabling behind the motherboard try in a hope to improve air flow. I've set all the fans on medium. I have also reseated the AC Freezer 64 using AC M1 paste as per instructions.

I now get temps of:

Idle:

40' on core 1 and 47' on core 2
45' on chipset

Load (othos):

55' on core 1 and 60' on core 2
50' on chipset

I left the system running during the day but unfortunately orthos didn't run for too long as the machine was off by the time I got back (8hrs later).

Do these temps still look to high? I have noticed that the cooler contact isn't perfectly in the centre of the IHS on the chip. Is this important and should I be lapping to cover the entire IHS?

Cheers

The chipset and PWMIC temps are probably quite high too and will be the contributing factor resulting in high CPU temps. Also the AC Freezer 64 Pro can't handle too much heat. No doubt with your setup it's heat saturated resulting in the high temperatures you're seeing at load.

If you want to lower the temps and run silently then your best bet would be to buy the Thermalright HR-05 SLI or similar heatpipe chipset heatsink.

Check out my thread on here about the HR-05 SLI to get some idea of just how much of a difference a good chipset cooler makes on a socket 939 setup.

Cheers for the advice wrt the chipset and cooling. Just about to order the SLI chipset cooler and see what happens to the temps overall. I've also added another 120mm fan into the Antec 182 case.
