Hi all,

We are currently looking at updating our kitchen. This will involve knocking out two or three walls where possible and we plan to do most of this ourselves. Does anyone know of any free/cheap and relatively simple to use floorplan software?

This would make our lives a lot simpler :)

Thanks!

Depends how tech/software savvy you are. I would recommend Sketchup if you can pick new software up relatively easily. It will let you create a 3D view too which is very helpful for visualising spaces. I'm fairly sure there was a thread on this about a year or so ago which suggested alternatives to full on CAD software.

Good to hear. Top tip - create groups as often as you can, it's so much easier to edit and keep control of the drawing. More so in 3D.

*Double or triple left click > right click > group.

*Double left click to edit a group and right click outside of the group and 'close group' to come back out of it.

* = You need mouse in select mode for this to work.

Anything that's a duplicate (e.g. doors) you can select Component instead of Group and then copy paste.. this lets you modify one component and the rest will change with it.

Also, right click on a line and 'divide' is quite handy.

*Double/triple click and keyboard 'S' gives you scale to resize things.

Check out the 3D warehouse, often things in there like doors, cars for driveways etc.

Interesting - I literally never use the groups in sketch up - always components, i think sketchup themselves realised that groups were pointless when the made the key command for components "G"!!

I just find it easier to decide if I want to have something create a duplicate of it's copied as it stops me making mistakes. I can see it's easier to use the shortcut but I would make mistakes if I didn't do things in a completely logical way as I rely on that instead of my poor memory!
