Floorstanders vs Bookshelf

My lounge is about 5m x 4m - I've been tempted to replace my Kef Q Series stand mount speakers with some floorstanders for some time.

Not talking massive money here, something in the region of about £400.

I would like a richer (is that suitably vague) sound without being so reliant on my sub to give music some umpf. My Kef's are too bright and lack bass on their own, they can't 'fill' the room.

Is it worth me doing this, have others got good experiences of floorstanders?

Thanks

I have monitor audio bronze bx5's and think there great!! Not sure how subjective I can be but seem really nice with loads of detail....also not massive so good in a smaller space...

Your budget isn't huge for floorstanders, you'd be better off upgrading the standmounts if you want something better to be honest. Just the size of the floorstanders will mean more of your £400 will be going on the cabinets of the speakers themselves rather than the actual drivers. I'd be looking at some quality second hand standmounts for £400 personally.

Second hand floorstanders is where I'd go. They have a LOT more gravitas than bookshelves £ for £. If you have space, which it sounds like you do, go for floorstanders as they just sound whole and well-rounded. They're also a lot more bassy than bookshelves, but it's just as much warm, pleasant, ambient bass that fills in the low tones, as it is in-your-face punchy bass that smacks you in the gut when a bomb goes off or a car crashes.

I got some Mordaunt Short Aviano 6s for £180 two years ago and they sound massive, even at lower volumes. Your budget will get you something second hand that will knock your socks off, got to be floorstanders though!

If you really have to go for floorstanders, the Monitor Audio BX5 or KEF C7 are probably your best bet in that range.

If you can afford a little more, try the Dali Zensor 5

I looked at the aforementioned Tannoy DC6T when purchasing, I too settled for the MA BX5's as they are slightly smaller and the walnut finish I picked, blends in a lot nicer.
