Floppy Drive Not Working

I've got my new Barracudas, that I'm hoping to run in RAID-0. I also got a new floppy drive because I need to "Make a disk" for the RAID drivers. However, I've installed floppy drive, put the floppy disk in, and it says there's no disk in the drive.

I've tried several combinations of the wiring, as it appears they can fit in the drive upside down or whatever. Have I missed something? What could be the problem?

If you put the cable in the wrong way round then the light should be permanantly on so putting it on the wrong way round is one way of seeing if the cable is actually working, if no light appears then you may need to get a new cable (or possibly the drive doesn't work). Have you tried a different power cable from the loom also?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Its a brand new floppy drive as well as a new cable; one of those round Akasa ones. I've turned the cable the wrong way round and the light does indeed turn on. However, turning it back round the other way again doesn't give any answers either.

I don't know about the Akasa cables but do they have a notch on them where they are meant to plug into the motherboard? If not then maybe try swapping that round, just in case.

It does sound as if the drive should work though, I'll ask the dumb question anyway mind, are the disks write-protected or anything? It could also be a problem with the floppy disk itself, sometimes they say that there is no disk present when the disk is dying.

They doe indeed have a notch in them. And the it fits into the motherboard the only way I can see fit.

I tried a floppy disk in another PC and it worked fine, tried it in this one and doesn't work again.

Very odd.

Edit: does it matter which end of the wire goes into the motherboard and which goes into the floppy drive? The ends appear to be identical to me.

Yes all mine have a twist at one end, Check to see if the cable has a twist in it. The end with the twist should connect to the floppy.

Great shout! I'll give it a go, cheers.

Hi

Also check that your floppy drive is set correctly within the BIOS, a lot of motherboards are turning them off as default now, check that its set to the right type of floppy too.

Looks like it still isn't working, perhaps I've got another duff floppy drive? I've tried every cable combination I can think of!
