Early summer I decided to put up 5 fly tapes around the house, 3 downstairs and 2 upstairs. This was done because they were annoying as can be, landing on you at night when trying to sleep or while watching T.V, fly spray was only a temporary solution and we had to endure breathing the stuff in - often within 5-6 hours the presence of more flies was getting annoying again.
One of the more disturbing and disgusting features of fly activity is they like to regurgitate whatever it is they have eaten, this is often done on ceiling lights and other bright places like monitors and also mirrors and windows, these all seem to be prime spots for this type of activity. Do you recollect seeing those grubby little spots that seem to appear all over monitors and windows??? Yes it's fly vomit... just about 0.5mm to 1mm in diameter (brown or black in appearance)??? yes that is possible cat **** breakfast..... It makes me cringe thinking of what it might actually be.
I have turned into something of an eco-wurrior
Our insect situation has been worse, perhaps, than for some as I have added composters in the garden to do our environmental contribution, (I don't see the point in putting garden waste in a bin to go in a land fill, they stopped taking cardboard so that bin takes cardboard only till it goes to the recycle center with everything else, in my new car!!!!!!!) Also large metal and glass 'banks' (I used plastic 50 gallon drums) so we can properly segregate our waste, this has definitely attracted more insect action but the amount of actual waste in the bin had reduced massively over the fortnightly cycle. There wouldn't be a need for this if the blue tubs they provide were actually capable of holding 2 weeks of glass and metal for a family of 4 adults and 1 child, and if they don't get nicked all the time.
Here is the good news though... I was surprised to find that we had around 250 dead flies over the summer months and to my mind it was very effective at reducing the annoying buggers!!
It's not 100% effective as it requires them to land on the paper and I don't think there is an attractant on it, just placing them near a light source in the middle of a room seems to work.
We endured a prolonged period of these macabre shrines of insect death just to see how many we would accumulate and test the longevity of the paper... ohh and for 'visual effect' when taking photo evidence
I would like to ask if anyone else has any suggestions to a better way to deal with pests like this, we don't want to have the paper hanging around during summer again especially with dead flies all over them, my missus has ruled out this idea for next year unless there is absolutely no alternative.
Here is my new concept - the fly tie.
