Anybody any experience of using DIY foam to provide protection to camera equipment?

I'm looking to buy some to cut out spaces myself for lenses, body etc, but have no idea what type of foam I would need. High density, low density, closed cell, etc.

I assume somebody on here has done similar, was planning on using it in bags on public transport abroad where I don't want to carry round a bag saying "rob me I have an expensive camera".

Thanks.

That's the sort of thing I was after, but looking to do it myself in a small ruck sack I use as hand luggage, for example on flights. Obviously I wouldn't in a million years stick them though the hold!

I always find with camera bags like my Tamrac one, the inserts never quite do what I want. Was thinking of doing a similar thing to those flight cases with the holes cut into foam.

Was looking to use my existing Berghaus rucksack for not much money, rather than spend (more) money on a new bag.

My aim was to buy a block or similar of foam and somehow "carve" a camera plus lens shape out of it, so I could just drop it into my rucksack.

Mind you, those Kata bags look very nice!
