Hello
I was just after some advice on my wife’s 2007 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol. when you first start the car it sounds normal, however after about 5 minutes of driving a whining sound can be heard from the engine area. After about 20 minutes the whining sound can no longer be heard. The temperature needle is in the middle of the gauge where it normally is. I plan on taking the car to the garage but thought I would check in here first.
I have hopefully uploaded a video of it. If anyone has a rough idea of what it could be, I would be grateful. The whining sound can be heard the loudest at 20 seconds in.

Many thanks

How many miles has it done? Could be the belts in need of a change? My st has started to make a whining noise and I'm hoping a belt change will fix it.

It could also be an alternator bearing on its way out.

Sounds like clutch/gearbox to me. It is deceiving tho, does the sound continue if you coast with your foot on the clutch in gear?

It doesn't continue when clutch is depressed and can be heard as car slows down like the noise is slowing down and then speeds up again when accelerating

My wife does that as well when I'm driving ;)

Could be gearbox bearing on the way out if it only does it under load. It's unusual for such a low mileage box though.

Sounds like a wheel bearing?

My Ibiza started making a sound similar coming and going then became constant. Seat changed the rear bearing and its all gone.

Well my friend came and had a look earlier and noticed that my power steering fluid was empty :/. So I have cleaned the hoses off and topped up the fluid. The noise hasn't reoccurred but I don't know where all the fluid has gone.

I have an 03 1.6 zetec that's done just over 42k miles and had almost exactly the same problem.
The noise I had was the roughly the same pitch but was more a rubbing sound like it came and went every second. It turned out to be the cam belt.

I'm pretty sure there was steering fluid issues with that Focus if it is a MK2 pre facelift, cracked reservoirs. Get it checked out before the pump gives up.

Low PAS fluid would certainly make a whining noise, but it wouldn't change with engine loading.

No evidence of the leak on the ground where you park?
