What are they like, 90 and 110 bhp engines
I have been told by some to avoid and others say they are fine.

So which is right?

Not necessarily bad engines (they are a joint peugeot/citreon group engine, also used by Mini/Ford/Volvo), but they do have a bit of a bad reputation with DPF related faults, and if neglected can need the Turbo replacing.

Obviously ensure it has service history, Eloys DPF fluid should be refilled every 37.5k miles iirc and the actual DPF is advised for replacement every 75k miles according to Ford.

All depends why you are looking at it - depending on mileage you may be better off with a petrol - potential diesel problems can now be a lot more expensive than older diesels were - the cheaper running costs are not necessarily as attractive if something goes wrong)

Im just looking, I will probably get another 1.8 or 2.0 diesel engine one.

It will be for an Estate around 2007-8 year

The 2.0 Litre one is also a Peugeot designed engine, but for the most part can be found without the DPF up to around an 08 plate I think - double check before buying). Having owned the 2.0tdci (with DPF!!!) I wouldn't personally recommend it - it pulls and performs well, but is not what I would call economical on the whole.

The 1.8 is probably the one to go for - it is the old Ford design that was used in the Escort and Mk1 Focus, basically bulletproof, no DPF problems, and Turbo failure is a lot rarer than the 1.6.

Can these dpf filters be bypassed (and still pass MOTs?)
Obviously bypassed with no ill effects, not done and then ruin the mpg/drivability of the car.

Having looking into as the DPF on mine was up for renewal - yes you can at present, but there is no guarantee that regulations won't change in the future i.e. if the car came with a DPF fitted then it must be present (And in the case of my Focus it's identifiable on the MOT Print out/V5 as Focus Euro IV)

The DPF has to be physically removed and the ECU reprogrammed to remove the Eloys additive injection procedure - I was quoted approx £500 for the whole lot to be done, but in the end I decided just to get rid of the car. MPG and drivability should be improved if anything as you are removing another restriction from the exhaust, but arguable you would need a remap at the same time to see a noticable benefit.
