Focus 1.8 or 2.0?

To be honest if you are going to buy a Mk1 Focus you might as well buy a Mk2 Mondeo instead. Same 2 litre engine - though it seems more economical - and more kit in Ghia X form. It's from the same generation as the Focus so the Focus doesn't really do anything appreciably better and as they shared a showroom but the Mondeo was more expensive, as you'd expect, its a bit nicer inside as well.

And the best bit?

I'd be amazed if you found a Mk2 Mondeo that was anything more than a 3 figure price. You'll pay double for the Focus.

Mk2 Mondeos are now pretty ancient cars and most are well into banger territory so I'd not normally recommend one but to be honest a W plate Focus isn't any better, it just costs more! The Mk2 Mondeo isn't even that big, either. Especially compared with the Mk3.
 
1996-2000. For context, the Mk1 Focus was 1998-2001 before the Mk1.5 appeared so they are roughly comparable.

As I said I'd normally consider them to old to recommend in any thread but lets face it, the alternative is a 10 year old Focus so in this rare case I think it's time to go back in time and pull out the Mk2 Ghia X recommendations :D
 
K, taa. I didn't think that Mk3's were into £hundreds territory yet.

I get confused sometimes with Ford's tendency to whack some new panels on a car, give it the once over and give it a new Mk designation.

I will also occasionally be towing around 950kg - this seems like an easy excuse to get the 2L, but however most tow sites seems to think the 1.8 will cope fine.
