Hi all,

Not sure of the correct terminology for this stuff, but the spring that returns the gearstick into the central position in the gate appears to have gone. It returns from the right side to central, but not from left side to central.

Is this something I could fix? I assume it is a spring that does this, is it accessible or is it within the gearbox itself? Basically is it going to be a cheap or expensive job!

Car is a 2000 Focus 1.8 Zetec.

ASH1982, that is just fantastic!! What a great guide and nice to know someone (me!) is going to benefit from the time you took to put it together.

One quick question, does removing the center console mean that I don't have to remove the gater surround? I assumed that would be my first move.

Thanks again, and I will keep you updated when I give it a go in a few days!

Cheers :)

Well I fitted the new spring yesterday with some help from a friend and it took no longer than 10 minutes!

Thanks again for your guide, it was great to follow and left us in no doubt what to do. And as you said in the guide, it's great to think I fixed the car for £3.50 instead of the £80 or so Ford would have charged!!

Cheers :)

You need to unscrew the gear knob. You then need to unscrew the three screws holding the centre console in place. You then lift the whole console up and over the gearstick and handbrake. You don't need to touch the gaters surrounding the bottom of the gearstick and handbrake at all.

Don't have a pair so im wondering what my options are lol :p
Just use a pair of pliers then. I only used the Mole grips as I found them in the tool kit first. TBH I wouldn't have thought it would be that hard to remove whatever tool you use. I am sure you could just lever it off with a screwdriver if need be.
