I've been looking at getting a Mk 1.5 focus (on around an 02-04) plate and much prefer the st170 interior, and the prices for the cars are more than acceptable but the insurance is silly for a relatively small performance boost over the standard range. As such I'm now looking at the 1.8l TDCi (115ps models) in various trims (would like leather seats, and the tdci looks nicely remappable
).
But just out of curiosity I was just wondering what made the st170 engine different from the zetec/duratec 2.0l engine - parkers lists the mpg to be only 1mpg less than the standard 2.0l (and better than the auto) despite the added 30 odd bhp.
So is parkers wrong, or are there fundemental differences? If so can the standard engines be upgraded fairly cheaply by replacing a select few components or is it more of a cumalative effect and not worth considering?
