Foglights - a lost cause

Today I saw a Ford Focus police car belonging to Devon and Cornwall constabularly driving around the city centre in completely clear weather with...

.... his foglights on.

I just don't get it :( Why are people obsessed with foglights?

I just find a little vexing when somebody I've never seen before accuses me of having an 'obsession' with something simply becuase I've posted the odd thread about it :)

It was a thread about foglights not about me. His post was JUST as irrelevant as mine if not more so.

You've all clearly read FAR too much into it. You've yet again seen what you wanted to see rather than what was there :)

I use my front fogs on country lanes along with my main beam. They are invaluable for spotting and dodging potholes.

You perceive them to be invaluable but infact they are not - at the sort of speeds you are travelling anything a foglight illuminates at the side of the road that you wouldnt otherwise have seen will be under your car before you've had time to react.

Fair enough. It was a rash spur of the moment post prompted by the 'grrr' I felt from his pointless post, further exasperated by the fact I'd never seen him before. Sorry.

So I've posted two threads on how annoying foglights are in the last year. Big deal. Most GD'ers post 5 threads a week on which socks they should wear. It's on topic for this forum and usually leads to an interesting discussion.

I have to admit I've used my front fogs on a narrow country road before. It helped light up all the potholes.

See my reply to Nick - I'm convinced people assume that the extra light is helpful but I really dont think it is. As I said, by the time you've noticed something extra by using foglights you've driven into it anyway - the beam spread doesnt reach far enough into the distance for you to be able to take action.

They don't affect/dazzle you in anyway. Ignore them, grow up and move on.

You mean they don't affect/dazzle YOU in anyway. You must appreciate that everyones sensitivity to light is different.

If they didn't dazzle at all, then their use would not be illegal and would not carry a fixed penalty notice.

I shall continue to administer the use of my fog lights with common sense.

Why not just continue to use them only when foggy? You've got Xenons anyway - nothing the fogs light up on a country lane will make the blindest difference. At the speeds we are talking it really will be a case of 'Oh loo.... crunch'.

At 30mph, you are travelling at 44 feet every second. At 60mph, you are travelling at 88 feet every second.

Your foglights illuminate the road what, 10 feet in front of you? So if you do manage to miss a pothole in your headlights, perhaps becuase your eyes are firmly fixed on the road just in front of your bonnet, at 60mph you have a whole 0.1 second to either brake or steer around the pothole.

Is anyone on this forum a good enough driver to react to an obstacle and steer the car around it in a 10th of a second?

No?

What foglights do on country roads is give you a perception of increased visibility. Becuase the light directly in front of your car is brighter, your brain perceives there is more visibility. This gives you confidence and makes you do things like post on the internet telling us you rock at cornering becuase you've got your foglights on.

5 pages on foglights.... what a lonely and pathetic forum.

This is a motoring forum, we discuss motoring related topics. At the risk of sounding patronising, if thats not what floats your boat then GD is a couple of subforums above.

Although I wont make the mistake with this guy I made with the guy at the start of the thread :o
