Annoyingly it seems that this has been removed... is there a way to get it back?
Folder size in status bar in Vista?

No you've misunderstood. In previous versions of windows the size of the folder you are currently viewing is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the window, this is not present in Vista and the only way I can see to find the size the contents of a folder is to select everything.
btw you can get the menubar by pressing alt

You can but it's not very convenient and it also includes subfolders which isn't what I want.
