Today when I was sorting through images I'd taken from a recent event, I assume must have accidentally pressed something on the keyboard and a notice came up saying "recycling items" and know the folder on the external drive that the images were in has vanished.

There was approximately 10,000 .NEF files in that folder and now I can't find them anymore, photorec doesn't show up any of the files when I scan from the free partition.

How can something like this happen. I seems like the files are still allocated?

Bit confused by what your saying here but if it said recycling items I assume it sent them to the recycling bin in which case the file data would still be in the same place but the path to them would have moved from that folder to the recycling folder on the root of the drive - so they wouldn't show up under the old folder any more.

(In some more exotic setups you might have a network recycling bin or something but I assume you'd know about that if you set it up).

What OS?
Any 3rd Party Recycle/Shred utils installed?

Windows 7 Pro x64. No 3rd party deletion apps installed.

Recuva?

Set for all files, and scan, I assume you've switched on system and show all files, and show hidden and system files?

Yes, nothing's visible in explorer.

Tried Recuva but it doesn't seem to be showing all the files as I recall them.

Going to try doing a full scan with photorec, but god knows how long that will take!

Well I seem to have recovered them all somehow with photorec using the same settings I tried before, strange, but oh well. Thanks for your help anyway guys. :)
