Folding at home is a distributed computing project which aims to simulate protein folding.
There is too much to write here and I'd be repeating what's already out there. I'd suggest Googling "folding at home", "protein folding" and maybe "ibm blue gene".

Pretty simple -
Stanford University (in the US) research cancer causes. They haven't the computer power to research it all by themselves, so we do it for them.
In return we get that nice warm feeling inside that goes with helping a very good cause.
