folding box

Hello all,

I want to setup an apache server and since the box will be idle most of the time why not.

I wonder what sort of cases you guys use for these purpose?

It has to be cheap and well compact since it will go in its corner and only 2 wires will run to it. Power and eth. Everything will be through Putty. No keyboards monitors nothing.

I had a look at HTPC section, but its expensive and Micro ATX.

Also, I would appreciate your ideas and experience on "value for purpose" chips that will do the job.

Any ideas/recommendations?

Edit: Anyone using rack 1U cases? Any links to companies that manufacture such cases and are known for quality and value?

Thanks.

since i run a server mine is an old beige wonder (Sprayed black!) with hot-swap abys in the front and plenty of airflow. It just sits and folds trying to escape from yeggstry (Not a chance),

If you can spare the room I have an Antec 4480 and it's great for the price. <£50 including a PSU.

If you want to go down the small form factor route I think Biffa managed to get a Quad in there. I think the thread is in the case mod section.

As for CPUs, a lower-end Core 2 Duo is probably your best bet. Reasonably low power, cool enough and will happily sit chewing on a work unit. I have an iMac 1.8Ghz Core Duo (not Core 2) which completes a SMP work unit every other day.

I've got a e2200 on the way to replace my e4300.

As theheyes said, a good budget cruncher will be a low end Core 2, my E4300 can crunch about 1 a day at stock.. It was doing about 1 and a half a day at 3GHz but since i've gone back to the stock intel hsf I cant overclock at the moment.

Cause its been playing up, needing stupid volts to hit 2.8+ and I need the extra mhz for CSS (i'm an avid player) and every extra FPS helps :p

So i'm hoping that the e2200 will hit 3Ghz on stock volts

Plus I can't overclock the other system due to the motherboard not having the options so my theory is, E4300 at 1.8 with the extra cache will be better than the e2200 at stock for crunching, or am I completely wrong? :p

Aaaaaaaaaah.

I didn't realise that you had two systems. I was going to say that the E4300 was the better option for folding.

I would forget the 1U cases unless they are in another room. To keep these systems cool they have to run some vary fast and noisy fans, so you don't want them in the same room with you if it can be avoided.

Also, forum rules won't allow us to post links for competitors to OcUK (naughty) ;)

Why don't you have a look in the sale part of the OcUK website? If you're not too worried about the cosmetics, there are often some good cases in there that a re a bit dinged up, but work fine and save you a few pennies. For example, there is a neat Lian Li MATX case for sale there now, which would be a neat stick in the corner box.

MATX boards shouldn't be a problem either, I run 5 of the the Gigabyte G33 boards and these have loads of SATA connections on them, even supporting RAID 5 if you want.

Hope that helps

If you're within reach of Devizes I have a case that might do nicely. I'd better not say more or I'll be in breach of the sales rules.....

I have 5 of These buggers, overall, probably the best case for the money I've ever bought:

Only three shown in this picture:

Case: Antec 900

And Have One of These AS Well

Case: Lian-Li V1000

Both are awesome cases.

have an assortment of CPU's Quad 6600's, E6600's X6800's. Have had little to no cooling issues with any of them and they are all air cooled apart from my Dev-Box which has an H2o system on a Lian-Li V1000.
