VMware, Ubuntu, SMP x 2

Virtual PC 2007 supports 64 bit hosts, but only 32 bit guest OS, so no SMP :(
Hmm thats a shame.
Whats this vmware thing?

It's non-sucky software that allows for OS virtualization. It pwns Virtual PC. ;)

It's also damned easy to use - even I had no problems with it :p

Stan :)

How does it differ from virtual pc, which is what i've used before... does it work in exactly the same way and do exactly the same thing?
Is it free? Can i run linux and the smp client in it from windows?

Celeron 2.4 running Windows XP and 5.04 CLI
Athlon 2600+ running Windows XP and 5.04 CLI
Sempron 3000+ running Windows XP and 5.04 CLI
Dual PIII 1.0 box running Debian Etch and CLI as installed by finstall
Did have a P4 3.0E running Windows XP and 2x 5.04 CLI but am stopping on that, already finished the WU on one thread and deleted the install, just running the other now with -oneunit and currently at 37%

Think that's all, null :)

Haven't been keeping up with the SMP stuff have you :p

You can run Ubuntu 64 or any other 64bit Linux distro of your choice from within Windows and yes you can run the SMP client. I suspect most SMP folders are doing it this way. They're not as hardcore as some of us who run Ubuntu almost exclusively now :cool:

Of course i just realised my media center isn't dual core so no smp client on that... and you have to have it running pretty much 24/7 to meet deadlines don't you?
Thats the reason i haven't been paying much attention to it... however i'm considering popping a nice little x2 3800+ in my fileserver soon, and that would run 24/7 with any luck.

I'm now running one SMP client in native ubuntu, I did run one cli client and the GPU client in windows but I'm about to stick my X1900XT-X up for sale as I keep getting batches of hundreds of eue's with the thing even with it underclocked:eek:
I have to work out what to do with the spare CPU power thet the SMP client won't use.
I'm also wondering if it's time to ditch windows for good :cool:

X2 4400+ @ 2.75ghz + xp pro + cli x2 -11/7
PD 930 @ 3.8ghz ++++ xp pro + cli x1 / x1900xt-x cats 6.10 + gpu cli x1 -24/7 (air :( )
P4 3.2c @ 3.4ghz +++ enterprise server 2003 r2 + cli x2 -24/7
T2600 @ 2.3ghz ++++ xp pro + cli x2 -depends on school timetable (flat out at weekends)
a64 2800 @ 2.6ghz ++ enterprise server 2003 r2 + cli x1 -currently my testing rig for the os functionality so rarely on

borgs:

So someone else is going to get your cursed XTX? :p

Install a second SMP client. If you want to know how just ask and I will give you a mini tutorial :D

Yup! Since installing Ubuntu I only use Windows for watching movies*, photoshop and the occassional game. If I can get Photoshop working in Wine it will be one less thing to jump back into Windows for!

*No linux drivers for X-Fi yet so can't get any audio [yes there is on-board audio but I can't be arsed removing a case fan so that the removable audio module for my board can fit]
