Well I hope my contribution made some difference, i'm planning on upping the output a little for next week, but plans for that are a bit hush hush!! One will soon see!

Whats the best settings for a core i3 machine 2gb ram?

Buy more RAM:p
Sorry can't help as I'm still on a Yorkfield. I'm sure someone else will though.

Impressive tiffy, Dekez. Thanks for the news. I won't ask where you got the stomp photo from;)

I see Toxic is back & I have only 4.2 years until he stomps me:eek:
Finally sorted out the ssd & seem to be running with consistent stability now so my ppd should rise:)

Biffa's reposible for 78% of the increase in dumpage:eek::D

I have to hold my hands up to slacking, the noise and heat are too much to cope with over the summer months, the upgrades since last summer had certainly made things a little toastier. Unfortunatly I'll be out till it starts to cool down again and production will probably be all over the place at best.

In case you didn't see this in the other thread:

Vijay Pande said:
For new bigadv WUs, we have changed how the points are calculated to bring them back into balance with the rest of the points in Folding@home. There are more details in this post:

http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=19059

The main jist of the change is that we are decreasing the points associated with bigadv WUs, from 50% over SMP to 20% over SMP. As with previous points changes, this deals with only new WUs to go out, not with WUs that have be collected, etc. I want to stress that the bigadv program is still continuing, but that, as we've mentioned before, this is an experimental program and subject to changes.

It's clear that any change to the points system is controversial, but this one has been raised as a very serious problem by many donors. After investigating the issues raised, we agreed that this was significantly out of balance, and made this change. Moreover, the feedback we have gotten is that we make a change soon and do so quickly, like "removing a bandaid" rather than drag out the pain. I'm sorry to have to make any changes at all, since any change is disruptive, but we (and many donors) felt very strongly that this change was very important.

The other change that we have in mind to do is to bring all classic and GPU WUs into the Quick Return Bonus (QRB) system. This would help further bring all FAH projects into balance. There may be some issues with GPUs and QRB, so we are looking to see what we can do to minimize problems with that before making a change in the points for GPU WUs.

Finally, I would like to remind all that we do listen to donors and take their input very seriously. There has been extensive discussions about the problems with the points system with the huge PPD's seen with bigadv (sometimes reaching 500,000PPD) and the lack of QRB for GPUs being major shortcommings.

Considering the great variety of donor opinions on this matter, it is no surprise that we agree with some donors and disagree with others. Moreover, with points, there will never be any system which makes everyone happy, but our goal is to try our best to balance the project as a whole, taking donor input seriously, and making hard calls when we feel it is necessary. This was definitely a hard call, but hopefully in time donors who disgaree now will come to understand the issues raised by the other donors and appreciate their point of view.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the PPD for different teams, I imagine it will bring the PPD for some of the bigger enthusiast teams down quite a bit.

Personally I think it will be good to see GPUs become competitive again if they bring in a QRB for them, it will be nice to have a few more options when considering a build for folding.

I doubt you would be better off in terms of PPD but depending on how it works out, there could be a situation where the amount of extra points from bigadv doesn't make up for the extra hassle (large wu, big loss if they fail, need to run 24/7 etc) involved with completing them.

If there was only a 5k difference I'd be tempted to switch back to standard SMP, but for 10K I'd stick with bigadv. Will have to see what the numbers look like.

That's exactly what i was thinking.

Well I just accessed SETI@home for the first time since 2000! Downloaded boinc. Obviously things ahve progressed since back then btu it's not downloading any work units. Are there currently no units/server issues?

Once I get it all up and running again will look for team ocuk!

Hi all

Haven't posted for a while. Thanks for the news dekez nice to see an increase in the team rankings but the Hewlett Packard seem to be hot on our tails

Shame about the bigadv bonus decrease, but then if you don't want everybody switching to solely bigadv I suppose they had to make the change. Looks like they're not finished making changes either.

You're welcome, yes will be interesting to see how things turn out. Hopefully the dust will have settled by the time I upgrade in August.

On another note, I had a power cut from 10pm-1am last night so my rig was off for the whole night in the end. Very random, apparently a fuse blew in a box a couple of roads over, not had a proper power cut since I was a kid!

Thanks for the news Dekez:)

My output will be down a fair bit from now on due to the changes in bigadv:(

I was thinking changes would come, tightening the deadlines and dropping the points for the 6903/4's but didnt expect this.

I think this will rear its head again soon when bulldozer is out 64 core rigs will be doing 1mill ppd even with the changes:confused:

Also think they should have rolled out the QRB to all classes of WU at the same time.

At least its across the board. Yes output is down on bigadv and bigbeta but all teams are suffering and lets face it you still get a pretty good ppd/watt ratio on bigadv on anything over 8 threads (even 8 threads isn't *that* bad)

But the main thing is that its unilateral for all teams crunching bigadv.

Yes the gpu work units are still OTT in credits/size and there may be some merit to the conspiracy theories of Nvidia and Stanford's relationship (can't have people stop buying GPU's for folding!) but whats new there? :)
