On time for a change! :D

Ecxellent as always...... :D

On a side note - I have a question for Biffa:

What would net more points/£.....

Dual Socket LGA2011 (EVGA SR-X or ASUS WS)

Quad Socket G34 (Supermicro like yours)

4 x 2600k's

Me thinking about getting back into folding soon and would like to make an addition to the 2 x 2600k's & 1 x 990x I already have.

Additional: have there been any updates so that the 680's can be used without using the V7 client and beta thingy?

Right.. ok. So some of the below is using new parts (mainly mobo and ram) and stuff from famous auction sites for CPU's where possible.

Code:
	G34	SR-X	Z9PE-D8	2600x4
Mobo	540	540	440	200
CPUs	1000	2000	2000	500
RAM	185	100	100	185
Coolers	80	60	60	80
PSU	100	100	100	200
Case	100	100	100	100

Total	2005	2900	2800	1265

G34 = 350-450K PPD @ under £2K for a build (overclocked 12 core 6168's)
LGA2011 = 200-300K PPD @ nearer £3K for a build. (Stock cpu's)
2600Kx4 = 120-200K PPD @ £1.2K

Everything is calculated running dedicated boxes on Linux, on windows with linux in a VM shave 15-20% off the PPD and add some licensing costs but you could also end up putting GPU's in there which would obviously increase the PPD, increase the cost per PPD and increase the cost to run the things, plus every GPU you add will take away some PPD from the CPUs.

Main issue is the LGA2011 can't be overclocked more than maybe 5% because there are no unlocked Xeons and SB-E doesn't like FSB clocking.

Obviously calculating the 4 x 2600K has a lot more variables, I just went for the ballpark on things like mobo choice (p67) ram (8GB) cases etc. You could probably shave or add bits and pieces on or off to try and get better ppd/£

Power/heat/space may or may not be a concern, thats up to you.

What is a concern for all is that the WU's available will adversely affect the performance, thats why there is a rough range of output quoted as there are vastly different returns on the types of WU's you crunch, and it looks very much like the big-big WU (6903/4) are now going the way of the DoDo so its hard to calculate what type of return you will get on what type of rig, because say we only get 8101's on the bigadv front, they are limited to Linux and 16core+ cpu's so the 2600's will be stuck with standard SMP.

Lots to think about :)

As to 680's not sure right now, sold mine, but at the time a 680 was getting around the same ppd as a 570

Cheers Biffa

Just what I wanted to know - will have to see if I can pick up a few cpu's at a reasonable price and then buy the MB etc to suit.
