Folding@Home on the PS3

apart from apparently helping science in some small way what is the whole point its not like you get paid to do it wouldnt ppl rather run games and watch movies on there ps3's . also can some explain how ppl can be into this folding thing sounds pretty dull or am i a misguided fool?

People leave their PCs on overnight for downloads and/or because they cant be arsed switching it off and on again...

.

Maybe I should have been more specific - I cant see why leaving a ps3 doing f@h is any different to leaving a PC doing it (if you are going to do it - being relatively isoteric in general ) its not going to be any more or less damaging to the ps3 compared to the pc

As stated, if Sony have allowed it to be developed then they will have thoroughly tested it

The other point is of course - certainly in the past , you have been given the choice of doing one f@h work unit and sending that off - and then downloading the next when it suits you (it can be automatic if you want it to be but it doesnt HAVE to be) so therefore all the talk about 24/7 operation is irrelevant twice over imo

I'd argue that the evidence with 360s so far is that if you use if a lot it seems to be less prone to failure than if it's used here and there.

My daughter uses mine for DVDs all the time and I play (even if only for half an hour or so) most evenings and it's never so much as hiccuped.

So maybe running a bit of folding could actually be good for it; if not the environment or your bank balance.

Firstly - no way of relating MS's design of X360 to Sony's design of PS3 - one COULD be fataly flawed (like the dreadful MS power brick initially) and the other could be ideal - no way at all to know . Completely seperate systems, different designs, different cooling. Evidence for one can not be argued for or against the other unit imo

Not tomention that there are good units and bad units (for whatever reason whether its individual componant failure or whatever) - I still have a release month x360 working ok even though it hasnt been stressed that much, people on here have gone through several in the same time frame using it the same amount

I concur with you in regards to environment and bank balance though :D

It is just an ePenis thing really. I think a lot of folk started doing it thinking the 5p a month electricity and some old PC parts that are laying around the house is worth helping for medical research. Also you got all these components you want overclock and stress, this is your thing.
Then a lot of people decided to measure their ePenis and started sticking in top of the range stuff to get more work done to say 'Hey look how fast my PC is'
But at the same time, it is now a usefull tool for benchmarking and stress testing rigs.

so its completly pointless for a ps3 since there all gonna be the same only thing to brag about is how much you done but as said rather play and complete games than fold.

Well no, you can bung it on if you go for your tea and do an hour or so. Sure you might not see any benefit, but in the long run, i dare say we will all be happy these people done the folding.

Here is an article about it. It isn't too detailed or that, but does show that Folding is having a purpose, especially compared to SETI

Also IIRC the PS3 is quite power hungry when in stand by so it might not cost much more to have it folding away lol

I hadnt heard this - I wonder what it has to keep powering when in standby to make it so "hungry"

Infact it appears i was mistaken, it is the PS2 that is really power hungry sorry. It uses about the same amount as the 360, all for a red light lol

Here is an interesting article.

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm

The PS3 at load only uses about 199Watts, but a PC on idle uses 145 watts

I know this link isn't totally scientific, but it isn't too bad a read. I am defo switching WiiConnect off though lol
