Hey guys
Though I would run this by you lot to make sure I'm not making any monumental errors or assumptions!
The gf was talking about buying an electric heater for our front room, obviously as we all know, most household problems can be solved by buying PC hardware
, so here's my plan:
Move the shed folder back into the house to heat the room, but this will mean making it quiet enough to be inaudible whilst watching TV in the room.
So plan is:
Replace noisy 4x 8800GS with 2 x MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Replace stock cooler and current fans with decent quiet fans (I'll pick these up as and when they come along in mm)
(Here's where is gets a bit wierd!
)
Build sound proofing wooden shell that doubles as coffee table with mesh at front top for ventilation (back open). Airflow will come in via 2 140mm fans at the back and out through 2 in the front of the case, which will sit in the soundproof shell. It will be able to slide on and off so in summer the shed folder can go back outside.
Technical design blueprints:
Main things I need to check are:
- Will the 2 460 be ok on a Antec earthwatts 650 PSU? (CPU is a low powered, underclocked athlon x2, but would like to upgrade to 1055T 95W if they are ever released as retail)
- Are the MSI 460s quiet? Reviews I've read say they are but if anyone has there own experience or suggestions of quieter (but not massively more expensive) it would be great to hear.
I appreciate the wooden coffee table cover thing may be a complete disaster, but even if it isn't quiet I still have the option to watercool, and worse case senario, the shed folder goes back into the shed with 2 new 460s
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.
Cheers
