Hey guys

Though I would run this by you lot to make sure I'm not making any monumental errors or assumptions!

The gf was talking about buying an electric heater for our front room, obviously as we all know, most household problems can be solved by buying PC hardware :p, so here's my plan:

Move the shed folder back into the house to heat the room, but this will mean making it quiet enough to be inaudible whilst watching TV in the room.

So plan is:

Replace noisy 4x 8800GS with 2 x MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Replace stock cooler and current fans with decent quiet fans (I'll pick these up as and when they come along in mm)

(Here's where is gets a bit wierd!:p)
Build sound proofing wooden shell that doubles as coffee table with mesh at front top for ventilation (back open). Airflow will come in via 2 140mm fans at the back and out through 2 in the front of the case, which will sit in the soundproof shell. It will be able to slide on and off so in summer the shed folder can go back outside.

Main things I need to check are:

- Will the 2 460 be ok on a Antec earthwatts 650 PSU? (CPU is a low powered, underclocked athlon x2, but would like to upgrade to 1055T 95W if they are ever released as retail)

- Are the MSI 460s quiet? Reviews I've read say they are but if anyone has there own experience or suggestions of quieter (but not massively more expensive) it would be great to hear.

I appreciate the wooden coffee table cover thing may be a complete disaster, but even if it isn't quiet I still have the option to watercool, and worse case senario, the shed folder goes back into the shed with 2 new 460s :D

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

2x 460 should be OK on a 650W PSU i've got 2 of the 1024MB versions on a 650W PSU with an overclocked Q6600 and haven't had any problems yet. (Unless you count coming home from work to silence the other day then finding that the paper on top of the box was wet :eek: looks like it managed to rain in and round a corner  causing it to shutdown. Any how after some terrible grinding noise from atleast 1 of the fans on the front of the case ot start up for a few mins all seems to be OK atm but enough of my problems :p)

Don't know about the rest but i like the idea :D i've got the main SETI rig in the living room behind a chair but needless to say 3x 295's on air aint quiet ;)

I've got my home rig in the living room but its on water, not that that matters as it still needs 7 120mm and 2 92mm fans, but its quiet enough :)

Excellent, cheers guys that all sounds good (apart from your leak ReaVerUK! hope no real damage was done) time to hit the buy now button!!

The GF will, of course, still be cold. Maybe if you added a nice orange glow, that would work better. :)

Yeah you're right, maybe I could put the rig in the fire place with a monitor in front with a open fire screen saver! :p

dekez - the coffee is in the wrong place - dont put it there, if it spills then it will get inside the system.

come on, really - its just common sense :p

ha ha, I'm just being realistic, if I put a rig next to the sofa in my living room, someone will put drinks on it, but I'm hoping the wooden thing I build will protect the system when the inevitable happens! :p

460s should be arriving today :D so will be able to start work soon.

Oh yeah and the gf bought an electic heater yesterday  - no faith at all!!!
