Work on the how-to is coming along. I've been somewhat busy with real work but this weekend should give me some time to get it darn close to done.
Excellent job so far :)

When you get to a point where it'd happily replace the current how-to have a word with Berserker and I'm sure he'll be only too happy unstickify that and stickify your new one

Sammael's lost some borgs - I wondered what had happened to the production !
yup - he posted details in last week's news thread :(
unfortunately the problem with getting permission to run F@H (or any DC project for that matter) is that as soon as anything happens on a machine running it the guy with the power always decides that must be the problem and rather than investigating just decides that the software must go

In Sammael's case he's having to re-install the machines so any crashes are going to be cured whether it was anything to do with F@H or not (in all my years in this project i've never had a machine become unstable as a result of actually being used). I would just love to see his boss' face when they screw up after another 6 months of use without F@H anyway :p

sormicoft - any extra machines you can bring to the cause will be great, if you can get some mass borging going then even better - just make sure everything is cleared by people with the authority to do so as nobody is asking you to risk your job for it

let us know how you get on - and be sure to parp in advance before you go stomping the whole team in the first week :p

I've got 2 of these GB 188-pointers,

XP1700@2050MHz
Avg. Time / Frame : 19mn 29s - 138.94 ppd

XP2500+ (stock 1833MHz)
Avg. Time / Frame : 19mn 45s - 137.07 ppd

now since those machines usually vary quite a bit in ppd (the XP1700 is usually 10-20% better off than the Barton due to the clock speed) I can only assume that these WUs are severely bad on memory bandwidth or something

if you are running dual clients try stopping one of them and give it a few hours then see what sort of time you are getting then

other than that make sure you are getting the SSE optimisation message at the beginning of work...
[04:51:19] Writing local files
[04:51:19] GB activated
[04:51:19] Extra SSE boost OK.
[04:51:20] Writing local files
[04:51:20] Completed 0 out of 12500000 steps (0)

However, since then i've not seen the damn icon so i can change it back :O

Help me!!!
as far as i know the only way of getting it back is to restart - either restart the machine (or log off and back on or what-have-you) or end the winfah task (don't kill the core itself - that will usually damage the WU) and then when you see the core has finished it's stuff restart the GUI from the shortcut

unless of course WinXP has just hidden it for you - most likely explorer crashed for some reason and the icon wasn't re-drawn afterwards

hooneeawr - welcome to the team :)

greenlizard0 - Billy has a good point, it's more likely to be the RAM that is being used so lowering the CPU usage won't help. Could be worth disabling large WUs or -advmethods (or both) or even selecting deadlineless work as that uses less than 10MB ram generally. Alternatively with the 5.04 beta version you can specify a maximum memory usage in the config which will stop the client downloading WUs which will use more than that amount of RAM.
Check the memory usage in Task Manager and see how much the core is using then that should help you decide which course of action to take.

It'd be a shame to lose any crunching power but at the end of the day this project is meant to run happily in the background (which it's quite capable of not doing with many of the newer projects) so kick that console into shape if it's messing about with your resources :p
