Im about to come into a little bit of spare cash and I want to build a mini TAX PC, multicore with a mountain of RAM to use for setting up Windows VMs for training with.

I've thorught of miniATX board, C2D Q6600 @ 3 Ghz, 8GB RAM and a 500GB HDD, which will be for OS and hosting VirtualPC images.

Now my question is, if I run 1 x BOINC client per core, what sort of cobblydumpage would I see off that in a 24h period?

f@h does not use bonic, so zero is your answer with f@h however seti does but i dont know what you will get

As jak731 stated, BOINC is not an option for F@H, but you could run up a VM with 64-bit linux. Running the SMP client should pull between 3000 to 4000 PPD on a 2x core in SMP setup.

Just curious, what mATX board are you going to use to get 3Ghz on your Quad ?

What O/S will be your host O/S ?
.

Biffa is the best person to ask about small form factor folding.

I'd be concerned about cooling in a small case. In the grand scheme of things Q6600s are pretty warm. I have mine running @ 3Ghz with a Thermalright Ultima 90 HS + Fan in a standard ATX case and on a warm/sunny day temps can exceed 60C and you should really keep temps < 70C in sustained usage.

SFF has its uses but my philosophy is to always buy the largest case permissible for a given situation for cooling reasons and a generally easier life putting it together.

Water cool it. There are several options out there which are specificaly designed to fit SFF set-ups, but I agree, SFF + OC is probably not the intention of those doing the engineering, all bit it, with a little inginuity, one can compensate for it.
