Following a Photoshop tutorial but using Illustrator.

So i'm trying to create a typographic wallpaper using a photoshop tutorial, but I wanted to create it in Illustrator, but I am stuck at step 6, but I can't seem to merge everything nor can I command click the thumbnail to cut it out of the words

Im no expert at Illustrator, so if you know the commands or what to do, I would appreciate the help

What I would do in AI is duplicate my large word and outline it so it's just a shape instead of letters. Then use that as a mask, so you have to bring it to the front and then select the little words and right click "create layer mask". You'll find plenty of resources on outlining and layer masks online.

Reading further I see you still need the small words outside of the mask, so you'll have to duplicate them and send them to the back. Use groups to make selection manageable.
