Friend of mine recently got a 4K monitor along with a new PC and was telling me how sharp and detailed everything was (he originally had the same monitor as me, the ROG Swift PG279Q) which started me thinking about replacing my monitor, initially with a 1440P OLED and then 4K started to tempt me, but after posting here and someone (sorry @ED209) suggesting I wait as we're close to CES I'd decided to hold off.

But having started looking and then reading posts on Reddit, OLED_Gaming and watching numerous videos I ended up weakening and getting the XG27UCDMG. And I'm so glad I did, 4K paired with OLED is next level, the image is pin sharp and the motion clarity even when not running at 240FPS is second to none, I wouldn't say it's mind blowing, but it certainly gives games a whole new coat of paint......

And did I mention motion clarity, WOW! One of the first games I opened up was Diablo 4, game switched straight to 4K and the change was noticeable, everything just looks so much sharper, but then you start moving around the screen and by comparison it made my 1440P LCD look like I'd been playing with oil smeared over the screen. The same with BF6, once I switched it from 1440P to 4K the level of detail it brought out was outstanding and again as you run around a map the smoothness just isn't something I've experienced before, even with the PS5 Pro connected to my LG C2.

And I've not even configured HDR yet, this is still on SDR with a few tweaks, thanks to recommendations from TFTCentral.

Only minor issue I have now is I probably need to get my glasses checked, on some text I can see a slight red fringe at the bottom of the characters, but if I tilt my head up slightly it goes away and text is pin sharp.

It’s probably not your glasses / eye sight, it’s the usual fringe you get with QD OLED and its pixel structure. It’s more difficult to spot at 4k 27” compared to 1440p but it’s definitely there! I can see it on my AW2725Q if I look for it, although because of how good the rest of the monitor is I can mostly look past it.

Don't underestimate that TrueBlack coating imo, it's the best out there and I've tried most! Really adds punch and clarity to the displayed image

OP’s new monitor isn’t the true black one, it’s the QD OLED semi gloss.

Look at you out here giving him FOMO for something he’s only just bought…

Maybe, if I use the lower half of the glasses it goes away and as I said it's pin sharp, if I use the top half then it splits to red/green. I'll do some experimentation when I get home, may well be that in the office my monitors are around 1m from me, at home the monitor is much closer.

No doubts the TrueBlack coating adds a little punch to the colours, but I'm not sure it's enough for me to worry about at this stage. And with WOLED there are quite a few reports of uniformity issues, something I'm not seeing with this monitor. My only fear with QD-OLED is there quite a few reports of people scratching the screens easily, hopefully I'm a little more careful.

And should Asus announce a new super OLED with the Stripe Layout, TrueBlacks and the BlackShield film losing the silly stand I'll simply sell this one and replace it.

For now my FOMO is sated until we get the next round of Intel/AMD CPU's and the next gen Nvidia cards.

Very brave time to buy a monitor just before CES. I'm sure you'll love it though.

Quick! Get on Reddit and show a photo of an OLED next to a non OLED on a dark scene and give it an NPC title like "YoU GuYs WeReNt KiDdInG"

Got HDR setup and working which does look really nice in games, but what a pain compared to consoles. Enable in Windows, calibrate HDR via the HDR calibration app which isn't preinstalled or obvious and then enable in game assuming you can find the option, then depending on the game you may need to calibrate it again anyway because it ignores the profile you've already created in Windows.

On a side note, I'm using the console HDR mode as that's apparently the brighter of the presets, but do people use the brightness boost functions or leave those off? In BF6 I can enable HDR but if I try and calibrate it I'm unable to correctly set the max white level as the slider won't go across far enough to match the target window.

After a little over two weeks I’ve decided to return the monitor, which is a shame as it is really good. Unfortunately the OLED doesn’t play nice with my glasses and causes a chromatic aberration effect which gives me a headache, raising the height of the glasses helps a little but it still there.

Hopefully when the new RGB Stripe OLED’s come out I will have better luck, being closer to the LCD layout I’m hopeful it plays better with my glasses, just need to wait for them to hit the review sites and see what is said.

If you still wanted to stick with currently available OLEDs, the WOLED monitors typically get much better feedback when it comes to not causing eye strain and headaches.

The new tandem WOLEDs use a relatively normal sub pixel layout (RGwB) just with the extra white sub pixel - whereas QD OLED has the triangle structure that often (along with the added colour depth you get on QD OLED) contributes more heavily to eye strain and headaches.

The 280hz tandem WOLEDs are all good monitors too, Asus have a glossy version and Gigabyte and LG have matte versions.

At this stage I think I would rather wait for the RGB Stripe displays as they are less likely to have the particular issue I was experiencing with fringing, which wasn't just text but other elements on the screen as well. It's a shame as reverting to my 1440P LCD (an Asus PG279Q) is a noticeable drop in image quality and clarity, especially in motion, when reverting it's far more noticeable than when I changed up to the OLED.

My worry now is when the RGB Stripe displays are released (and ideally I'd like a 27") I'm not going to be 100% certain if I will experience a similar issue and won't really know until I get my hands on one, and if it's a WOLED panel they may well still have issues with banding which the QD-OLED didn't, so then do I wait for the QD-OLED's based on RGB Stripe.

And yet you’ll get people using monitors that size or bigger who claim that they don’t suffer from that issue lol.

Are you set on 1440p as well? Asus have their 27" 4k RGB stripe going live in the first half of this year - and outside of 27" the QD-OLED models with RGB stripe layout going live first are all of the 360hz 3440x1440p 34" ultrawide monitors.

I'm not sure we'll see any 27" 1440p RGB stripe monitors (from either panel manufacturer) until much later in the year considering nothing was even previewed at CES.

It's possible the majority of people who are using these monitors with glasses either aren't affected or aren't sensitive to it. It may also be the case that over time the brain tunes it out, unfortunately for me chromatic aberration in games has always made me feel nauseas so I turn it off immediately, so to have it on a monitor in normal use is not something I can work with.

If you mean, am I set on staying on 1440P then no, the XG27UCDMG is a 4K monitor so I will be looking at 4K again. Most likely I will look at the ROG Swift PG27UCWM, but I'll wait to see what the reports of banding are like, hopefully with the newer generation WOLED's they've worked it out, otherwise I'll be waiting a little longer.

Yep, sorry, had got it confused in my head that it was the 1440p 360hz version rather than the 4k 240hz! I blame Asus releasing monitors at every resolution/size/refresh rate/panel tech available with only minor adjustments to the actual model name. XG27AQDPG, XG27AQWMG, XG27AQMR, XG27ACS, XG27ACS, XG27ACMS etc. These are all real monitor names...

I'm really interested to see the new PG27UCWM, wondering how removing the white sub pixel impacts brightness but it'll be really interesting to see the 1080p 480hz mode on it as well. I never liked 1080p 480hz at the 32" size on the larger WOLED models.
