Same thing happened in 4, I noticed a slight change in 5 too, now I think I see it in 7. But I don't know... the font seems... different

EDIT: No difference with GPU acceleration turned off either! The wierd font is bugging me but I think I'll get use to it over time...

I just upgraded while reading this thread. The font is indeed quite different in Firefox 7, everything looks bigger.

In 3 -> 4 they switched from GDI rendering to using Direct2D / DirectWrite so a big change was expected, during Firefox 5-6 Microsoft released an update which tweaked Direct2D to render fonts slightly differently, I'd just got used to how it looked in 6 and now Mozilla have changed it, annoying.

Why the heck do they not just change it to a year then number

Eg 11.7 then next january 12.1... Firefox 27 doesn't really have the same ring to it...

They belatedly realised how ridiculous rapid release will make version nos, so now they plan to do away with version nos.

Dump, annoying, pointless, take your pick.

It looks like the default Cleartype font rendering mode was changed due a response to "blurry" text rendering which started in Firefox 4. I feel the new default font rendering mode in Firefox 7 looks like **** and I always prefer Cleartype, so I changed it back.

In about:config change gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode from -1 to 0 to change it back to the FF6 default mode.

They're just following googles naming system, seeing as so many, less knowledgeable people, think bigger number = better.

Font is clearer, however it's also larger. Looks like it's optimized for a 1080 screen imo.

I has problems with Fx 7.0.1 as it kept crashing so removed it and im now Fx 8b1 (Beta 1) seem good run that better than Fx 7 - final release is November.... Fx 6 was prefect but version 7 was bugged as kept crashing...

So they appease the illiterate?

I seriously hate it. They keep breaking some extensions I use.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who assume bigger number = better number. I think it's daft because once we hit double digits marketing people like to start again because single digits are more appealing than double digits.

You extensions? Well, firefoxes changes for this year have been available since early summer, all the popular ones work because they're updated regularly. Not like they didn't have plenty notice.
