Fool XP into thinking its on a network

Is there anyway to fool XP into thinking its on a network?

I demo our software and part of it is using Sharepoint Server which seems to have trouble operating if its not on a network, even if the network is unrelated.

eg:
No network cable plugged in, sharepoint fails.
Connect the demo box to a swtich box, sharepoint succeeds.

I have seen some kind of dongle that plugs into the ethernet port that acts as a crossover of sorts and fools XP into thinkin its on a network, however I have no idea what these are called and subsequently have failed to find one

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you want is a loopback plug.....

Google Windows Loopback adapter, it adds a device that, as the name suggests, loops the connections back on itself.

Or give the network adapter a static address, or possibly access SharePoint using http://localhost rather than http://hostname.

Lastly, why on Earth are you installing SharePoint on XP?!
