This gets on my goat, "England deserved to win"

"Man U deserved to win in the 2005 FA Cup Final"

If you dont put the ball in that net, you dont deserve anything.

I agree with that totally, and I don't believe in luck, things happen for a reason. If a team played well all match, out playing the other team then in the last minute the team who played rubbish put a goal in, fairplay they win, football isn't an assesment of gameplay throughout the match it's whoever gets the goals.

I disagree. A team can play outstanding for a game and deserve to win because they provided me with the enjoyment. The other team however could play a poor game and score a scrambled in goal, that’s not deserved. Football to me is not just about the result but very much the process too.

If they can't hit a barn door with a banjo then yes they don't deserve to win. If, for instance, a referee makes a serious error (e.g. not giving a penalty) then it's possible that a team "deserve to win" but they don't.

Saying 1 or the other team desreved to win is certainly an overused phrase.

It does have some logic behind it however, generally being used when 1 team is far more attacking than the other.

Personally I have always beleived that there is only 1 stat that matters in football, how many times did you put the ball in the back of the net.

If a team does all the attacking, has 20 shots but doesn't score and then gets caught on the break in the 90th minute then it is there own fault for not putting away their chances.

if football was only about the result, no1 would watch it.

What team do you support? if they played open attacking football but got spanked 10-0 every week do you think the the fans would keep going?

Attractive football is a bonus, results are what matter. That is to fans, players, managers, chairmen etc.

Of course a team can lose but still deserve to win. Anyone that says otherwise can't have watched football, ever :/

For me whilst that is true for the most part, it is quite a narrow viewpoint. We all automatically make judgements on who should or shouldn't have won on every game we watch. Given that we usually can say that 1 team deserved it more than the other. The bottom line is however that there are no points decisions in football, you score more goals than the opposition and you win.

'We deserved to win that game...' is a cliche and saying it just makes people feel better when they've just seen their team lose.
Makes it worse IMO, if you did actually deserve to win it.

If you're just beaten by a better side you can just hold your hands up.

Ahh, thats why there is always so much interest in newcastle, they win loads every year....

saying being spanked 10-0 every week, well tbh, if your losing like that then you clearly didnt deserve to win. silly comparison really.

I've seen teams spend an entire game in defensive mode, the ball hitting their woodwork several times and a stunning performance by the goalkeeper keeping it nil nil. Then with ten seconds to go they get a free and score the winner.

I don't tend to say " we deserved to win", however i have said that we didn't deserve to lose before.
