Just got Football Manager 2006 and haven't really played a football management sim seriously in a while, think the last one was one of the Champs.
I like playing em though (started out with Football Manager on the C64 :D) but I've also lost touch with football a fair bit in recent years too :o Used to be an avid Newcastle supporter and kept track of everything in the world of football....then video games took over :o

Anyway, just wondering if anyone's got any useful tips for the game?
I've started as Newcastle, doing fairly averagely although at least Owen's scoring a fair few goals. Also got an Argentinian striker called Pablo Vitti who's not bad for his age either but he's just been injured for 2 months :(

Hmm not sure Boumsong, he's set up some decent opportunities lately, certainly doing better than a few others :/

I'll have a mess around with tactics thanks :)

Thanks :)
I'm slowly realising just how complex and detailed this game can get :o Liking it though.

Thanks :) I'll have a go with that formation and try to track down some of those players.
Just switched my defenders to what you said, and also switched my two forwards to very creative and attacking and won a match vs Everton 3-1 :D No idea if I can keep that up though hehe.

Annoyingly Shay Given within a few weeks of starting decided he wanted to leave Newcastle, his performance plummeted and then he ended up going to Barcelona. I probably could have done better to encourage him to stay but was still learning even more than I am now :o

Well after spending most of my day off yesterday playing through the season and after following Rebel=UK='s tactical advice, I'm now up to 6th place from languishing near the relegation zone :D
So I'm happy :) Pity Shearer's retiring though, he's a good goal scorer.

Form and player morale play a massive part in FM2006. Make sure you're patched up too, fixes a few niggly bugs. Don't drop players if they're playing well, even if a supposedly better player comes back from injury or suspension or whatever. Give your players credit where it's due - i often find saying "well done" to all the team and "fantastic" to one member of the team that has played an 8 or higher works really well.

I've managed to get Ipswich to be Premiership champions and Champions league champions in <5 years, which I was really please with.
Bit of a miracle there, they need to hire you :p
I do make sure to give them credit when it's due :) Although I hadn't considered form so I'll bear that in mind.

Iirc....
Creators of original Champ Manager left Eidos, Eidos got to keep the name (Champ Manager) and got some other people in to create the new Champ Managers which are rubbish.
Creators of original Champ Manager go to Sports Interactive/Sega and create Football Manager which is much better :D

That's roughly it, I've probably got the odd name wrong.

Really should have set my game to the full database :o Losing out on so many players.
Classy sig btw Doohickey :)

Just won the European cup so I'm happy
Finished 10th in the league which wasn't bad going but want to do better next season :D

Just got hold of Besagno. And I'm trying to raise the funds for Carlton Cole although currently Pablo Vitti is doing well as a back up goal scorer to Owen.

is my current line up for the new season. Think they seem reasonably good.....fingers crossed at least ;)

He was a great player but all the clubs were after him with my game too. Then he got unhappy and started demanding to leave. :(
Made a fortune out of him though so that helped with a few purchases. Just have to hope it's not a mistake :o

Up to 6th in the league now in my second season with a few months to go.
Chairman's happy with me at least :D Although I've been extremely injury plagued this season :( Owen's under performing too with most of my goals coming from Pazzini.
Besagno's been doing brilliantly for a young player though.

End of the second season: Won the Euro cup for the second year in a row, got to the final of the FA cup but Chelsea outplayed me quite comprehensively.
Only got to 7th in the league so I'm underperforming a bit :(

I got a great striker the other day is unstoppable won the golden boot , got a new goals scored in a season for newcastle and won players player of the year all in his first sesaon playing for me. check him out Mirko Vucinic
He is very good :)

Just retrained Anthony Vanden Borre as a right midfielder and he's producing wonders, scoring a fair amount and creating a lot of goals.
Means I could do with finding another right defender but it was worth it.

In the summer I bought Adu who got injured in his first game after 30mins and has been out the past 3 months. Torn calf muscle. Gutted :p
Ouch pity. He's been amazing for me since I bought him last season (on the 07-08 season at the moment I think). He had about 3 games in a row getting hatricks, and he very rarely doesn't score at least once a match.

As a long term replacement for Neville have a look at Vaden Borre. Can play at DC aswell DR. He has already been mentioned in this thread a few times
Also try retraining him as a MR, he's fantastic in that position. Even better than as a defender.
