Just wondering if you use an app for walking or maybe cycling trails, I want to discover new paths and trails and have the same navigation as I would with a car.
This is Google maps on open moorland yesterday trying to send me a ridiculous way (I know the way was just testing)

So I have the basic ordnance survey app and alltrails but they are wanting a subscription, any alternatives before I throw money at one ?

I've tried komoot and strava and I picked komoot.

I find it very good for exploring on my MTB.
Its has paths and even paths that aren't paths. As in it will tell you to follow a route but you wouldn't even know it was one!

It has turn by turn navigation if you pay.
Its not subscription. Which is my favourite part. It's a one and done thing!

This is how I avoid paying for this sort of thing:

EDIT: This won't give you directions i don't think, just a top-down reference of where you are compared to the route.

I use the Ordinance Survey option in Bing maps on my computer to get a reference of where the genuine footpaths are (there's a lot of AI involved in maps and not all mapped paths are actually accessible), I then I use a "how far did I run" mapper to plan out a route along those paths. This also enables you to see the distance and elevation graph which is useful when planning.

I export that route to GPX and import it to Google Drive by clicking "new" in Drive and choosing the maps option. You can then import the GPX route, preview it and give it a name etc. You can even make POIs if you like.

On my phone I just load up that map (Saved > Map, the UI is pretty terrible here) and also save an offline map of the area so I don't need signal.

This will be today's running effort:

I think I did try kamoot but it seemed to be timing my routes and comparing them.to others maybe my settings? Thing is I do more tea drinking than walking

This sounds more like strava. Mine is timed but I didn't see any comparison.
I use it exclusively for an off road satnav
